Surprisingly good sound; a bit of a hassle to set upApr 30, 2010

These iHome Rechargeable Mini speakers sound pretty good, even approaching maximum volume. (I have not played bass-heavy music on them.) Great for the size and weight, adequate for the price.

For better portable sound, I would go to the iHome 29, which is a lot heavier. For best portable sound (but not for travel), I would go to the Bose Portable SoundDock, but that is too big to leave home.

They pack into a little bag (maybe the size of 1.5 adult male fists) and travel nicely.

To set them up is a bit of a hassle, but it's not a terrible trade-off for the sound, size, weight and rechargeable batteries. You must extend each of the two units with a little twist for each, then plug a mini-USB cable into each unit (not so easy, but certainly do-able), then plug the mini-earphone plug into the sound source (iPod), then turn each unit on. Then turn on your iPod, find your song, and you are ready. Not a big deal in your hotel room, but not a procedure that you would want to undertake in your rental car, for example.

Very easy to charge. The cable harness includes a regular USB plug for a computer's USB port, or for the USB port on your iPod's wall charger. The charge seems to last a long time, but I have not used them enough to evaluate this.

Because these are stereo, they sound better for music than the one-speaker units.

I got the red ones to minimize the risk of leaving them behind. My wife kindly changed the bag from flat-black (and so easy to leave behind) to brighter colors for the same reason.

These little speakers are Great! Sound is great and can be turned up quite loud without clipping, I can hear them on different floors of the house I am in. Clear and good base too. Convenient to have carry along anywhere, house garden, deck, you name it. At half an ounce they are a great back pack speaker too. They hold a charge for a long time, I used them for 10 hours straight and they didn't show signs of wearing down. LOVE them!

I got these for small easy portable speakers for travel and they work great. The sound quality is pretty good for how tiny these things are and I don't know how long the batteries last but it is awhile since I have never run them down yet while using them.

The only down side is the all in one cable has the extra USB cable for charging always connected. The plus side of this is that it is hard to lose the cable this way.

Let me begin by saying that if I'd wanted Bose sound quality I would have bought Bose speakers (at a Bose price!). You get what you pay for, and I didn't expect Bose sound for under thirty bucks! That said, the sound is pretty good for my untrained ears. It is certainly better than my Macbook Pro speakers! I listen to music, lectures, sermons and old radio programs. They all come through loud and very clear!

I also want to comment on battery life, but I've only had the speakers a couple of days. On one charge I've played them over 12 hours, but others say they last 3X longer. Twelve hours is all I need, since I play my Ipod all night as I sleep and can easily charge the speakers during the day.

If you purchase these, be careful not to set them on your laptop, as the magnet on the bottom of each speaker will terrorize your hard drive! The box they came in included a note to that effect.

Please be aware that this is the DISCONTINUED model, but it is a lot cheaper than its newer brother! Actually, the price varies according to color. The black one sells for just under forty dollars, while the red model was a couple of dollars under thirty. They have another color (purple, I think) for a buck less than the red one, but I'd pulled the trigger before I discovered that.

Will these Ihome IHM 78 speakers last? In our throwaway society, I doubt they'll be around in five years, but if I get a year out of them I'll be a happy camper.

I'm giving these speakers a five star rating because they work just as advertised, and that's all the consumer can expect! You get what you pay for.

NEWS FLASH -- I ran these speakers for several days, totaling about 40 hours on one charge!

These little speakers are prefect for what I need. Granted, they don't project a lot of bass, but being the size they are I didn't expect much. If you set them on a wood surface (dresser, night stand, anything hollow) you will get more bass out of them. If you set them on tile or cement (hard, solid surfaces) you will lose most of your bass. They do get quite loud with no distortion and they fit very nicely in a small carrying pouch. I take them on motorcycle trips with me where space is at a minimum and whenever I travel so I can listen to my own music in motel rooms (adds a touch of home). Initially I bought a pair of the IHM78 (grey/black) speakers at Target just because I happened on them and thought they would work perfectly. Upon further investigation I found the iHm78's (black and gold) on Amazon so I ordered them and took the other one's back to Target. This was only because I liked the different look of the 78's I got from Amazon (price was the same). These are not home theater guality speakers but that's not why I bought them so it was no surprise. What they are is small, convenient, surprisingly good sounding speakers that fit my needs perfectly. My only complaint would be that the don't come with a standard power plug to recharge them. It is a USB plug so it needs to be plugged into a powered USB outlet. Now, in this day and age, a lot of us don't travel with a powered USB connection so I just use the plug adapter from my iPad or iPhone and this works perfectly. If you don't have either of those there are other adapters out there that would work just as well. I can't speak on the longevity of the charge of the speakers before needing a recharge as I don't use them that much but it should not be a problem. All in all these are great little speakers that compress for storage and expand for use making them extremely convenient.
