5A great hard drive coolerMar 08, 2005
By Beavisclone
Pros:

Another fine product from Zalman. It's basically two blocks of aluminum that run the full length of your hard drive, with heat pipes connecting the two. The unit conducts heat very well, negating the need for active cooling (fans). This, along with the rubber mounts (which, honestly, are too hard to be terribly effective at minimizing vibration) make the Zalman Hard Drive Cooler a great addition to a quiet pc.

Cons:

Watch out for sharp edges. I didn't quite cut myself, but the two side blocks are definately ROUGH. Also, it's not terribly flexible. This was a big issue for me as my hard drive was just a little bit too small and I couldn't bend the unit properly to get the screws in. A quick trip to the hardware store for some longer screws solved that problem.

4Great product but screwed up the screwsJun 15, 2005
By John Woods "TObject"
This is a very nice looking fanless hard drive cooler and vibration dampener. It actually functions fairly very well from what I can tell.

On the negative side, the selection of screws used in this apparatus is puzzling. The screws that mount the hard drive to the bracket are too short: they barely engage the threads. Also, the screws used to mount the assembled contraption into a 5.25" bay are the same thread size as hard drive screws, where by convention, smaller screws are used for mounting devices in these bays.

Those are minor issues, to alleviate the first one, you can purchase longer screws, or drill the mounting holes in the aluminum sides deeper. If you run into the second issue, you can drill out your computer case holes to accept larger diameter screws.

This cooler can also be side- or top-mounted; a template for drilling the holes for that configuration is included in the package.

I hear this is a second generation of this product; perhaps manufacturer needs to come up with a third generation to make it just right.

5Another nice cooling product from ZalmanSep 08, 2011

I've installed these on two different home built systems now and, so far, I'm pleased. I've had issues in the past with dying hard drives and heat was probably part of the issue. I tried a few hard drive fans but they were often hard fit into existing systems and they also added to the overall noise factor. So when building some new systems I did some research and decided to try these Zalman HD coolers. They do a nice job without using fans. The only install issue I had is getting the ground wire lined up with the screw hole. A pair of tweezers the second time around made that easier.

I've also used the Zalman Ultra Quiet Cpu Cooler Intel and am very happy with those. They do a great job of cooling and are extremely quiet.

I am not sure what other reviewers complained about - the cooler fit properly over my WD 1 tb hard drive and the screws were the proper size to attach the hard drive to the cooler. The vibration dampening rubber studs to adapt to a 5 1/4 bay slot simply screw into the cooler. The only thing I can possibly see complaints about is that the screws included to attach the cooler to the computer case are too small - I had my own anyways so I didn't care about this. Besides, most people have their own screws to attach the cooler to the case - its the same screws used to attach the hard drive to a 3 1/2 inch slot if not using the cooler.

I don't know if my hard drive temp. will go down with this cooler, but it seems to be a good product and I would recommend it for others.

5MADE MY QUIET SAMSUNG HD EVEN QUITERAug 20, 2005
By Z. Wang
COULD HEAR THE HD SEEK DATA BEFORE INSTALLING THIS PRODUCT, HD BECAME ALMOST COMPLETELY SILENT AFTER. MADE HD TEMP INCREASE MUCH SLOWER, BUT EVENTUALLY WOULD REACH A TEMP ONLY SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN BEFORE INSTALLATION. BUT MY COMPUTER IS A COMPLETELY FANLESS SYSTEM, I BELIEVE THE COOLING EFFECT SHOULD BE MUCH BETTER IF THERE IS A CASE FAN.
