5Refurbished Wacom INtuos4 "Small" Tablet a Total Winner!Dec 26, 2010
By Louis S. Carrozzi "lsc9"
OK, just to be up front, I am not the seller writing a good review for a product I am selling. I saw a couple of "reviews" on here that looked a little suspicious to me, but I decided to buy the Intuos4 (small, refurbished) anyway because it was almost $100 off the regular price. So, what's my review?

FANTASTIC. Amazing product, and a total steal for $139 bucks.

I got the item in about 3 days, which was faster than I expected. When I opened the shipping box, the product box appeared to be in almost mint condition. There was no cellophane on the product box, but the box was sealed with a sticker, and no tears were visible so I am assuming the box was new. When I opened the box, the tablet, pen, mouse, nibs and nib holder were all wrapped properly and everything looked brand new when I opened it up. The smaller items were bound and sealed as if brand new. So, overall if you didn't tell me this was a refurbished item, I would swear that it was all brand new.

However, the proof is in the use. So I hooked it up... this was a little tricky. The tablet can be oriented either for left handed people or right handed, and there are actually 2 USB cords that look the same at first glance, but a more careful inspection reveals that there is actually a "right" and "left" cable. Since there is only 1 USB connector, you can choose whichever cable is going to work better for your particular setup, which is very nice. Like I said, the equipment was in mint condition, and I had no problem whatsoever installing the tablet drivers on my Mac. It is deceptively simple to look at the tablet, but you can customize almost anything on it via software drivers. While the product doesn't come with a printed instruction manual, there is the ubiquitous 104 page *.pdf file that contains everything you need to know to work the tablet. The *.pdf file is also directly accessible from the "Help" menu. The pen works exactly as advertised, and the scroll wheel on the side works great. I haven't had a chance to test this under Windows 7, but since Wacom writes the software, I am sure it will work correctly. The CD and instructions were also in mint condition. So far, everything has worked perfectly. I have no complaints about the functionality whatsoever, it works as if it were brand new.

A couple more cool things about this product are the pen holder, the mouse (yes it comes with a NICE 3 button/scroll wheel mouse!), and the replacement nibs for the pen. The pen nibs actually have different "feels" to them when working with the pen on the tablet, but I like the default one best, so far. There are 3 other kinds of nibs as well. Both the pen and the mouse are NON-battery operated which is also great. Another great thing about the mouse that comes with the tablet is that it's also wireless, but it also has a "proper" third mouse button directly behind the scroll wheel, so if you are using a product like Autodesk Maya or Mudbox, there IS a third mouse button! No more using the darn scroll wheel as a 3rd mouse button, which, as you probably know from experience becomes a serious irritation after a while.

This product is actually a LOT more "robust" or "customizable" than I thought it was, so this was a welcome surprise. There are many different modes of operation such as screen optimization, mouse tracking, pen tracking, tracking sensitivity, pen sensitivity etc. I found that there is a use for both the mouse and the pen. You can use the pen as a mouse if you want, and you can do everything you can with a regular mouse, but I found that the pen works better in "pen" mode and the mouse works better in "mouse" mode. For the pen and pad mode, and unlike a mouse, there is no acceleration to speak of with the pen settings, so wherever your hand is is where the pen is on the screen. It takes a little getting used to, but the pen is very sensitive so you can make very precise movements and clicks with almost no effort. You can also adjust the pen area to a specific "zone" of the screen, so for example if you want to just select one area of your work as the "working" are on the track pad, you can do that. You can also "force fit" the area of the pad to your screen, so if you aren't using a wide-screen display the tablet will adjust proportionally to your screen shape and resolution. Also, if you don't like the pen working in "pen mode" and you want it to act more like a mouse, you can set the pen to do that as well. Whatever you want! You can do it.

OK, so how about the size? I was kind of concerned that this tablet would be too small considering it is the smallest Intuos4 that Wacom makes. I thought that this tablet would be somehow "lesser" in terms of usability when compared to the larger ones. Kind of like cars, the cheap ones are not as nice as the bigger ones, right? I could not have been more WRONG! If you are working on a 16x9 format screen like I am, the shape of the pad is almost identical to the shape of the screen and you have a surprisingly large "swath" area over the tablet to position the pen on the screen. I find that I can make quite large, sweeping "hand strokes" as opposed to finger "small strokes" and have a good deal of tablet real estate to work with. Since the pen is always in the same position on the screen as on the pad, this can make detail work somewhat difficult, but not so. You can use the scroll wheel to zoom in and zoom out rapidly without ever needing to leave the pad, so your drawing area is always correct for the type of work you are doing and your pen strokes. As small as this tablet is, I am very happy with having enough room to actually draw.

As for the other functions, this tablet comes with 2 buttons less than the other models and there are no LED "words" to go along with the scroll wheel, but there are 4 small LED lights to let you know which of 4 scroll wheel modes you are in. Not only do you have the 6 programmable buttons (with like 12 functions assignable for each), but you also have 4 more "buttons" on your tracking wheel for a total of 10 buttons, plus an 11th "toggle" button in the middle of the scroll wheel which gives you access to up to 4 functions for the scroll wheel itself, which includes up to 8 "keystroke" combinations (1 forward, 1 back), per mode, so you can use your scroll wheel to access commonly used key functions in your application (such as "undo" and "redo") for up to a total of 16 key commands. (Think "iPod" for the scroll wheel functionality, except it's programmable) I would think that all of these functions are going to be plenty for normal usage. Another upside to the "small" tablet size is that this is the best tablet for my room. I have very little desk space, and if I had got a tablet any bigger, it just wouldn't fit. The other upshot is that it's also portable, so if you have a 15" laptop, this would be the tablet to carry with it. Overall I am extremely happy I got this one, even though larger sizes were available.

If 11 buttons and a slew of commands you can issue with the tablet weren't enough for you, you can also create individual profiles for each of your applications, so you can customize practically any application to have any kind of tablet setup. Like I said, this product is deceptively simple looking, and it's VERY robust. It is obvious to me that the engineers over at Wacom have done their homework for the Intuos4.

That's about it.

Bottom line? Fantastic product! If you want an amazing drawing tablet for very little money, this is IT. BUY IT. This product is totally worth the retail price of $240 bucks even if you can't find it on sale, but for $139 bucks you'd really be nuts not to buy this thing, even if it is factory refurbished, if your experience is anything like mine, you are getting a steal deal.

The Intuos4 "Small" Tablet rocks!!

I could not be happier that I bought this product.

Hope this helps, and thanks for your time!

5Good Deal! Wacom PTK440 does everything!May 03, 2010
By Brian Lombardi
Pros:
I must have researched for days and could not pass this one by! Even though this product is refurbished, I decided to go with the best price as I am a discount shopper, as well as a 'Gadget Head'. I love all kinds of electronic gadgets and I have to say that this is one of my favorites. It is really sexy, black, sleek, easy to clean. I have the small pen tablet, and let me tell you that it is not too small at all. Although the active area looks small, when you are drawing on it and looking on screen, you haveplenty of room. I love this thing and play with it all the time. I am a graphic artist and also love playing around with photoshop, so this is it!

Cons:
Really, to be very honest, the only thing that I can think of is that it does not hide finger prints well, but I have one of those computer cloths for wiping the monitor glass, etc., and it works like magic to clean this tablet. Anyway, as long as the fingerprints don't interfere with what you are doing, who really cares?

Overall Review:
Fantastic product even though it is refurbished. Also, I have to say that it took me a little while to decide whether to go with the Intuos4 or the Bamboo Fun tablet, and I know that I have made the right choice. You will definitely NOT be disappointed. There is so much that you can do with this tablet that it is INSANE! Buy. One. Now.

5Even though it's refrubished I got it in PERFECT condition!Jul 09, 2011
By ggkitty
I ordered the refurbished model to save money because:
a) college student
b) not an art major (but I love drawing on the side)
c) the reviews said that the refurbished ones were just as good as new.

Condition: When I got my tablet it was in the box, looking good as new. No scratches or anything. All the accessories were with it as well. It came with 10 pen nibs so no buying replacements for a LONG while!

Size: So I know it says it's SMALL, but honestly when you start using it it SEEMS HUGE! I was worried about size at first, but I am perfectly happy with it's size.

Software: Luckily the code to download software from Wacom had not been used yet. So I'm pretty lucky to get all that software free as well. I don't know if everybody else will be as lucky, but I surely hope so!

Customization: It has 6 buttons that you can customize. I keep my top button as a "button display" to show me what the buttons do. If you hold it down it pops up on the screen with 6 buttons and what they correspond to as well as the center scroll wheel thing(real technical terms I'm using... yeah). It basically works like an ipod scroll wheel. The scroll wheel has 4 different functions it can do that you can change by clicking the center button. I only use it for zooming though. The zoom function is really nice.

Before getting this I was looking at the medium bamboo fun tablet, but after further review the main things that made me choose this over the medium bamboo fun was:
*this comes with a mouse
*pen tip last longer (according to other's reviews)
*2048 levels of pressure (bamboo only had 1024)
*this one can tell what angle the pen is at.

The refurbished bamboo fun was about 30 bucks cheaper, but this is much much better than it. If you go with this tablet I am sure that you will be happy with your purchase!
