    4Wonderful addition to any office!Nov 01, 2010

I am often in need of scanning multiple documents, and the multi-sheet feeders of the various printers that I have had have fallen short--in a big way. They jam and you end up having to SLOWLY scan each document separately, flipping the docs over and having a separate file for each side/document. Tedious to say the least.
This product, on the other hand, is SO FAST and reliable! I was super surprised at how fast the documents not only fed through the scanner, but how quickly they processed into editable documents on the computer. The unit is quiet and smooth, and looks great in the office--not too obtrusive. (I hooked it up to a Dell PC with 12 gB of ddr3 RAM, 1tB hard drive, running multiple applications, and it didn't hang up once.)
The software included is extensive, and easy to maneuver. They come with detailed user manuals (on a CD). The unit contained all the necessary plugs and usb cables for both US and international use. You can even power the scanner via usb, so you're not stuck if you're needing it on the road for use with your laptop. Very nice!
I am really impressed with this unit. If you need to scan documents on a regular basis, and are sick of jamming, slow printers with useless software interfaces, this is for you.

5Precision-made duplex scanner easy to useApr 18, 2011

The Visioneer Strobe 500 is a remarkable little sheet-fed scanner, which comes with ScanSoft PaperPort 11 and ScanSoft OmniPage 15 as well as custom OneTouch 4.0 software and both TWAIN and WIA (Windows-specific) drivers.

The unit is amazingly small but has the feel of an extremely well-built machine with precision-made parts. It comes with a power cord with inline transformer (like a laptop) but includes five different power cables for different countries. The scanner unit snaps off the page-feed unit to make the scanner an extremely portable - 3" x 2-1/2" x 11-1/2" (plus cables). The two pieces fit together with tight tolerances - again, a sign of great design.

Installation instructions are extremely clear. Visioneer realizes that most people won't even follow the simplified picture Quick-Install card so they have the 4-bullet notice under "Before You Begin" (e.g. No not plug in the USB cable until after you install the software.)

The installation went OK as far as it goes - similar to the installation of a multifunction printer which comes with OEM software from other manufacturers. There are several stages where you just pray that the installer doesn't hang but everything went fine. One point I found confusing was the "optional" installation of OmniPage OCR software - why is this optional? Another confusion occured midway through the install when the software required me to check "close" instead of "next" - it was clearly not finished and I thought it the installer would, well, close. After the successful install, the software automatically checked the web for updates.

The User's Guides on the CD are a mish-mosh of many pdf's. It should be made clear in the printed Quick-Install Guide that the VRS User's Guide is the overarching instruction manual for the scanner - other guides are for the software.

Scan parameters are set in the custom VRS softare which feeds the PaperPort editing software (again, this isn't clear from the Quick-Install Guide.) I believe scans can be initiated from PaperPort also, although I have not tried this feature. There were a couple pop-up ads suggesting I upgrade to Kofax VRS Professional for $349. The Strobe 500 comes with "VRS Basic OEM." What could such an expensive upgrade bring since all the real work is done by PaperPort?

Scans are high quality and go smoothly. It is great that you can designate custom page sizes in the VRS software so that you don't have to crop later on. Over the years I have saved many pages torn from journals and magazines which I am in the process of scanning. The scanner can handle magazine pages well. I have never had a double feed. There have been the occasions when the software locked up for no apparent reason on large scanning projects. The fact that it can scan both sides at the same time makes large projects doable - no more flipping the stack over and crossing your fingers.

I give this scanner an A+. Once it is installed and you get used to how VRS talks to PaperPort, scans are a snap. Highly recommended.

    5Very fast and a great sizeDec 18, 2010

Most of my document scanning at this point is antique books that are falling apart, old photographs and old recipe cards.
This scanner set up very quickly and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. I use a Windows 7 system, and from taking the unit out of the box to running it took less than a half hour.
The software included is very easy to use and allows saving in a few formats including that all important PDF format.
It's fast. For a unit this size, it's incredibly fast. It will scan a 2 sided recipe card in less than a minute, and a page from an old book in just a little more time than that. It's reasonably quiet.
For recipe cards and photographs, use the front feeder rather than the ADF.
It's also very portable. If you remove the scanner from the dock, you can slip it in a briefcase or a messenger bag with a laptop easily. Just use the front feed for document scanning. It's a little slower using the USB cord for power instead of the power cord.
Several types of power cords are included.
I'm very happy with the speed, performance and size of this. It is a good thing for businesses that have a lot of documents to scan, and for individuals that have a lot of documents they want safely preserved in digital format.

    3A BIT PRICY FOR A SCANNERFeb 18, 2011
By ! MR. KNOW IT ALL ;-b "DR SHOCK"
The great thing about this scanner is that it can be portable and the docking station adds a 20-page automatic document feeder feature. However, trying to attach and remove the scanner can take some time and patience. If you can get over that issue, the rest of setup is simple. A nice feature in setup is telling whether to get power from the wall or from the USB, this works nice for portability. The end result is the scanning ability; it is quick and can scan to a pdf format in lighting speed. I would recommend this scanner for those looking for speed and portability; otherwise, I think you can find something just as good for a lot less money.

    2Complicated and somewhat dysfunctionalFeb 05, 2011

I do a lot of research before I buy something like this, I compared many choices before deciding this was the one based on my overall needs. And I did something else, I bought a local Neat Receipt to try out the whole concept of scanning in everything, to make sure I was headed down I path I wanted to travel. Well, the Neat Receipts was/is great! It made me comfortable ordering exactly the right scanner I wanted knowing this concept was going to be a very good thing. I Knew from 30 minutes in that I would keep the Neat Receipt even after I got the big one I was waiting for (not waiting that long really, but I'm not very patient either). I waited with the "bigger" stuff for the Visioneer. When the Visioneer came I unpacked it and downloaded everything to my net book and then the desktop, registered all the things, etc... the anticipation and research left no doubt it was to be a keeper and very well used so I wanted to start off ready to rock and roll on everything. What a let down!

The software packaged with it is great (or supposed to be) - but it was all so complicated to learn (not intuitive) - and it is Feb already with tax season approaching - after using all that time on research who has time (or energy) to "learn" new programs? AND even when I "got it" enough to do what I needed to do (and realized the software would be great once I took time to learn it better some other time) - it wouldn't scan half the stack I was using for the first try! Jams, feeding so fast it was crazy - it couldn't keep up and neither could I with all the double feeds and such... so I went to smaller bites of papers... all with difficulty. Then I got error messages about VRS, looked it up and followed the directions to reload programs - and got the messages AGAIN. When I finally resolved that, it would still skew pages (badly), say there was nothing loaded when it was (due to less than perfect paper edge going in), etc. I was down to ONE Page to work with to try and work this out. Frustrations galore.
I really wanted to keep this thing I had put so much energy and money and anticipation into. Keep in mind the Neat Receipt. Once I got the Visioneer to take a page correctly I did some tests - comparing the Neat Receipt (@ 1/4 of the price of this at Sams Club) to this thing that should have blown the Neat Receipt to pieces. It was the other way around! The Neat Receipts got things done faster, and better, and EASIER from the get go. It took wrinkled (this doesn't), it took tiny and thin (this has problems though it will take it if you MAKE it), it even took stapled together receipts (I didn't dare try that with this one) and Always Always Always the finished result was faster on the Neat Receipt. Didn't matter if I was scanning to PDF or Word or Excel or the respective internal paper handling programs - Neat Receipts won every time! Even though to get to Excel and such I had to do more steps to get there in Neat Receipts - it was still done and filed long before this one could get one page handled and placed. On quality too! (I couldn't believe it) Neat Receipts read everything, and this garbled a few things up. I was ready to do my first ever return to Amazon... printed the postage thing and everything... but I REALLY wanted to keep this thing I had so much into; so I thought maybe the big picture problem was because I had loaded everything on the desktop after the laptop, like maybe I didn't have the right stuff happening on the second computer (I know, it was stretch, but maybe). So I took my whole little show to the laptop - and I got errors from the Visioneer it wouldn't even identify that made Paperport shut down completely and more. After about an hour of messing around on the laptop and reloading things again, I gave up. Neat Receipts was still walking all over this thing in pure no kidding FUNCTION. I am going forward with the return. And I am getting a Neat Desk to meet my higher volume and double sided needs. Regardless of all the reviews (on Amazon and in the Magazines and all that) something tells me I will be very happy with the NeatDesk and the Neat Receipts together. I was not happy with this editors choice and highly marked in reviews monstrosity.
The Visioneer is compact and cool looking, and does feel very sturdy however. And I like how the feeder folds to cover it. Hard to "get" the number dial controller on the front (tiny learning curve). The Feeder insides has some issues... just doesn't grab pages well, and when it finally does it grabs two or three.
