3Does the job, but...Aug 21, 2011

When looking into small bookcases, this was one of only about two I found whose dimensions fit within the space I had available (trying to fit it under a 29" high shelf). Noting this, I decided to purchase this Safco "economy" bookcase due to the large price difference.

I quickly discovered that in this case I got what I paid for, and no more. Buyers should expect to spend a lot of time assembling the unit; although instructions were fairly clear and the correct hardware was included, the components themselves were not manufactured to the right specifications (or perhaps quality control at the factory was poor) and I had an EXTREMELY difficult time putting the thing together. This is unusual for me and was very frustrating. I actually had to bend many of the large metal pieces out of shape (possibly partly due to the fact that they were not packed very well in the box and likely got bent during shipment as well) to get them to fit together.
On the plus side, I did finally manage to get the unit assembled, and once that was done, it seems to do its job just fine, though it does look tacky next to my real oak desk, especially considering the two "medium oaks" do not even come close to matching (I did not expect it to be a perfect match, especially considering this one is actually steel, but this unit is of significantly lighter color than my "medium oak" desk). Another small complaint is that the top of the unit will pop up and down like some of those food or soda pop cans (yes, it really does bend a lot) and make a loud noise in the process.

Recap:
PROS:
-Works (holds books/whatever else you put in a bookcase).
-Includes hardware (screws, etc.) and clear instructions.
-Fits in relatively small space.
-Relatively cheap (college budget, here).

CONS:
-Difficult to assemble!!
-Pieces arrived in poor condition; not packed particularly well.
-Poor manufacturing; parts don't fit together and some (esp. top section) are deformed.
-Oak finish on steel looks tacky next to real oak furniture.

Overall, I'd probably give it 2.5 stars, but I'm being generous with 3 here because it does the job I need it to, and I saved some money by not purchasing a more expensive model.
