4Good, but not as good as I was hopingNov 13, 2008
By El Geraldo
I have a Netgear 802.11g router installed in a upstairs in a closet, in a detached, timber frame house. I bought the Terk antenna to connect to a Belkin network card that sits in the back of my main PC downstairs. The PC is about 50 feet away from the access point but there were 3 or 4 walls and/or ceilings, the steel PC tower case, a table top and my hairy carcass in the transmission path. Consequently the Belkin software only reported about 2/5 signal strength and between 1 and 36Mbps data rate. Sometimes the connection would drop out altogether. If I was doing a big download, I'd have to get up from the chair and walk away to reduce signal loss.

With the Terk directional antenna installed in place of the PC's stubby card-mounted antenna, the signal strength with me sitting in front of the PC jumped up to 100% and 54Mbps reported speed. This is short-lived however. As soon as the PC starts doing any serious file transfer, the signal strength drops to 2/5 and the data rate fluctuates between 18 and 54Mpbs. Both the signal strength and data rate seem to jump about quite frequently while data is transferring but stay rock solid on 100% with the network interface idling.

I have tried orientating the antenna in different positions. I tried placing a metal sheet as a ground plane beneath it but performance could not be improved.

The user guide says that the antenna can be installed on a PC or router. My router has a fixed antenna and I have PCs all over the house, so a directional antenna would be of no use there.

The cable is only just over 1m long, which means I can just get it onto the top of the desk. Cable loss can be quite significant, so making it any longer was probably fighting the law of diminishing returns. There is a slot in the base of the antenna for clipping the coax into, so that the base can sit flat on a desk. I haven't pushed the coax all the way into the slot because it would bend it round a very tight radius, which may crush the dielectric inside the cable. The cable can either exit straight out of the center of the base or on the left or right side. It cannot exit from the front or back. The cable has a transparent outer cover and dense braided sheilding beneath. The connector on the end of the cable has the hole (rather than the pin) in the middle, which seems to be the most common type. A TNC adapter is supplied in the kit.

In summary, the Terk antenna has done exactly what I needed but I am knocking off one star for the variable performance encountered and the flaky cable exit routing.

5Works well, compactMay 29, 2009

Worked as expected, got a very good boost of signal strength and speed in both directions.

Being directional also keeps the signal from being broadcast all over the neighborhood.

3Gives a significant but not outstanding gain in signal strengthFeb 20, 2009
By Aileen Hunton "Capturing a lifetime of memories with digital imaging."
I have a wifi connected computer in a camper outside my home, the camper has an aluminum shell and shields RF quite well. The Terk antenna made the difference between a marginal signal and a usable one, not as much as I was hoping for but enough to go from just a few megabits per second to 24 or more most of the time. My connection is now solid and not subject to the sporadic interruptions I was experiencing previously.

If I were to do it again I'd probably spring a bit more cash and get an antenna with more gain but it's not worth sending this unit back.

Bottom line: If your connection is just barely usable as is then this unit will do you some good. If you aren't getting anything with the stock antenna then my guess would be that this won't do the job.
