I was thrilled when I got the sharpener. It looked just like those really sturdy ones at school. I assured my kids that we finally had a dependable pencil sharpener.

But within 2 weeks the front panel (holds different circumferences of pencils) came undone, can't tighten any screws or bolts. It just hangs there.

It sharpens, but it's not so great. It wasn't nearly as hardy as I thought it would be.

Ah, this little gem brings back memories of primary school... no motorized sharpeners, not clumsy, lead-breaking single bladed hand helds... no, this is a true old-school 12 rotary blade sharpener that does the trick EACH and every time. The point is a more gentile slope with a nice point, rather than the abrupt slope of the blade sharpeners, which makes for a nicer lead and longer span between sharpenings.

With two kids in primary and a wife that loves her crosswords, we go through pencils and this baby keeps them sharp. Sturdy, nice looking, two mounting options (Mine is upside-down under a counter... out of the way) you can't go wrong.

I was pleased with the quality and build of this product, it's very sturdy. The mounting options leaves me with the inability to score this higher than three stars. There was a clamp mounting option that came with this. I tried in vain to get it to work. The torque generated while sharpening a pencil was greater than the clamps ability to hold onto the edge of a table. This might work if the clamp and sharpener had rubber pads attached, but they don't. So I had to track down a location to mount it with the screws provided. This was a challenge due the screws being so tiny. This limited your location options to anything that is made of solid wood such as a shelf which is where my pencil sharpener is located. Not my ideal location. Oh well it works...This product does an excellent job of sharpening pencils. I'm Happy Now.

2Doesn't hold pencil in center, doesn't cut pencil in centerFeb 21, 2010

I'll give this 2 stars because it cuts wood and didn't break off the wall, but that's it. It does not hold the pencil in the center, and that's really all you need to know to rule this one out.

How do I know? We keep a large batch of sharpened pencils on hand for our kids, and recently my wife expressed her frustration with the fact that nearly all of our pencils have wood extending almost to the tip on one side - even when they are fresh out of the sharpener. This means they have to be re-sharpened much more often, because even a slightly worn tip results in wood colliding with the writing surface.

It didn't take much investigation to figure out the problem: bad design of the positioning wheel (the one with different sized holes to hold the pencil in the center). It is held in place by a rivet that includes a spring and enough freedom of movement to allow the wheel to be turned to different settings. That freedom of movement, however, also allows the positioning wheel to shift side to side in the direction perpendicular to the rivet (and the pencil). Therefore, when even light sideways pressure is applied to a pencil in the sharpener, the positioning wheel slides to the side, the pencil moves off-center, and the cutter grinds it off-center. I measured the amount of sideways movement by pushing the wheel to the side, and it is 1/16" - about the same as the diameter of the graphite in the pencil.

This is a solid buy for manual pencil sharpeners. Good design, easy to use, has the ability to mount permanently or just temporary. My six year old can use it as well as my husband and I. Worth the money.
