Nice variety but still disappointingJul 03, 2008

I really like the variety of colors in this set. However, what is disappointing is that several colors are more "marker-like" than highliter. Once they dry, all colors are ok for being able to read the underlying text, but the indigo and purple are a little dark. These are more fine tipped than you big, normal highliter, but they do get the job done.

These are functional, but nothing to rave about.

I am one who gets frustrated when the print is smeared by a highlighter, so I tried these Sharpie Accents with the hope (but not much confidence) that they would live up to their smear-guard hype. Well, it wasn't hype -- they really don't smear! I've used them on HP Deskjet printouts, grocery store receipts, ballpoint pens, magazine print, and even paperback book print. One swipe of the Sharpie leaves no smear at all. Although it wasn't needed, I tried an immediate second swipe over the fresh highlight and it left only the barest of smudge. The highlighters arrive in a nice little plastic storage case. The colors remain sharp and clear since they don't pick up ink from the print. It isn't a big thing, but the retractable nub is quite handy - I like not having to track down the pen tops after I've used the pen. I've very happy with the product and recommend it.

My favorite highlighters, not without issuesSep 24, 2011

I love these highlighters, and won't buy any others now. I mean, I like these highlighters enough to be writing a review about, which I don't generally bother doing even for the books I'm highlighting in. However, they are not without their little quirks.

1) As others have said, some of these are closer to marker than highlights. I think the dark blue and red are fine, but the purple is far, far too dark. However, I do find it helpful for drawing figures or coloring a line on a graph for my reference.
2) My biggest problem with these is the the ink used to print the Sharpie logo on the pens themselves smudges like mad and gets on everything. I've started rubbing the logos off them as soon as I buy a new pack so I don't have this issue.

However, even with those issues, I won't use other highlighters.

1) I love the consistent ink and the smoothness of the nibs.
2) I like the clip so I can attach them to the front of a binder for short periods.
3) I like that they aren't the traditional thick shape so they fit into my smallish laptop bag more easily.
4) I also like that the tip isn't too wide, since it's almost the exact height of a line of text in my textbooks.
5) But of course, the retractable point is what really makes them great. I love not having to fuss with the cap when I hit a bit of text that needs no highlights. It also makes switching between colors a lot less of a chore (which I know sounds silly but when you are reading a few dozen cases a day, this becomes important).

Overall, in my opinion, if you need highlighters, these are the best to get. I think there could be improvements to the design, but they are still the best on the market.

Narrow tip, some too dark and I couldn't prove Smear GuardNov 25, 2010

At first unboxing, I like the fact that it has a clear plastic case holding all 8 highlighters, so you can pack them in a bag or briefcase and keep them organized. The retraction of the tip is nice, so you don't need to worry about caps.

COLOR
I'm not very excited about the color selection. With highlighters, I would think that you choose a variety of light shades, so as to not put a dark color over a black font to make it more difficult to read. I found the green, red and light blue to be a little darker than my preference, although they are not too bad. The dark blue and purple are just too dark. The orange and pink are fine. I like the yellow's fluorescence and brightness.

WIDTH
These are a little narrow on the tip for my taste. The broadest stroke I could get was about 3mm, which is the size of a capital letter in Times New Roman size 12. My current highlighters are about 4.2mm, which I like better.

SMEARING
The marketing of these highlighters seems to be focused on the fact that these have "SMEAR GUARD Technology." If you read the fine print, it says to make sure to let the ink dry before highlighting -- that's fair. It also says that it resists smearing of many pen and marker inks based on consumer surveys. I'd like to know how that all was tested.

In my own testing, I found minimal difference between these and my Hi-Liter brand. With a few rollerball pens, I could see a tiny bit less smearing with these highlighters. With a printout from my HP OfficeJet Pro K5400, the smearing was a mess. Even the next day, both brands of highlighters couldn't resist smearing badly.

However, on my HP DeskJet 5650, both highlighters performed perfectly by not smearing.

There may be some inks that resist smearing by these highlighters, but I didn't find them.

Overall, this is a decent set of highlighters, but I don't find them to be standing out from the competition.

The click/retractable feature is great, and the no-smear is legit. But if you actually want to use these for highlighting, stick with the 5-pack. The dark blue, red, and magenta are too dark for highlighting. Using them to brief cases, if I want to use the last three colors, I have to underline instead of highlighting.
