2TOTALLY misleading description!Sep 18, 2009
By Elise Ariel
Okay - this is called "Scotch® Packaging Tape, Two Pack with Pistol Grip Dispenser, 48 mm x 50 m, ST-181." One would assume that that means it is a dispenser, plus a two-pack of tape. Right?
So, I received it, and it was a big ol' wonderful dispenser, with one roll of tape. I called Amazon customer service to complain, and they offered me a replacement but ONLY if I returned the original "defective" product. I said time and again that it was not defective (I love my tape gun! it's great!), but they shorted me one roll of tape and I just wanted them to send it on over.
No, that wasn't possible. Dammit.
They sent the replacement gun by regular mail, and when I got it, I saw that once again, it only came with one roll of tape. I can't win. I used the other until the tape was gone, and returned it. So basically, Amazon wasted postage sending me another perfectly good tape gun, for the sole purpose of giving me another roll of tape. It's stupid and wasteful, but whatever, ultimately I got what I wanted anyway. The gun is great, and the tape is just fine. I'm only giving two stars because the description is completely misleading and no one at Amazon seems to care!

4Not bad, but...Mar 01, 2011

I purchased this item from an office supplies store online. There are two items that I disliked on it, but not enough to downgrade it much in review.

First issue, the guide that holds the tape against the rolling wheel was not aligned correctly, and effected how it fed the tape. A slight bend did correct this problem.

The other issue is with the cutting mechanism. The issue there is you are required to push on the clear plastic piece that helps flatten the tape on the box. This allows the cutting blade to slide out and cut the tape.

Personally I like the rollers that have the blade stationary. I have never injured my self on those. It was hard to gauge which dispenser had the retractable blades and which one had the set blades unless I went to a brick and mortar store.

The grip is comfortable. The handle may be a little short if you have larger hands, so be warned on that.

If you are looking into a dispenser, I'd suggest checking them out in a store and see which one you like the best. Then compare prices from here to local. Amazon often will save you money.

1Look elsewhereFeb 18, 2010

This is the worst tape dispenser I have ever used. The tension is all wrong, and although it is 'adjustable', you'll never find a setting that works.

Worse than that though, the tape comes out crooked. Nothing I have done has changed this. I'll roll the dispenser over the box, and the tape will start leaning to one side or the other, and bunch up, and turn into a total mess. I've not managed to tape a single box properly with this dispenser.

It's not as if Scotch/3M doesn't know how to make a tape dispenser- I bought this as an extra to use while my wife and I were packing up the house, since we only had one dispenser, and this was cheaper than the first one. Big mistake. The other dispenser I own (3M Scotch Gray Box Sealing Tape Dispenser (H180)) is also from 3M and is excellent. It always rolls straight, the tensions are fine, and it feels much sturdier. Plus, the parts are replaceable. This one does NOT have replaceable parts, so if something fails, you have to buy a new one.

I guess the only plus to this is that it has a safety blade, whereas my other dispenser doesn't. It's hardly a plus though, because you have to be pretty inept to cut yourself on a tape dispenser. Everything about the design makes it unlikely.

Avoid.

1Total Rip-OffDec 24, 2009
By K. Wiggins "Just HIS servant"
Well. the dispenser is only worth about four bucks maybe
five tops so that would make the tape about 18.00 a roll?
Doesn't ANYONE think that that is a bit pricey for a roll
of tape?? I just bought a SIX PACK of the exact same tape
at Sam's Club for 19.43 out the door....and I know it could
not be much more than that at K-Mart or Wal-Mart!
