4Neat preamp, change the tubeApr 16, 2009
By Mike G
This is a great starter preamp.

When i first started recording i was using an akg perception 200 and tascam 122L. the 122 is a decent interface but is almost too transparent for its own good. All of my vocal recordings sounded lifeless and detached.

I purchased this inexpensive preamp and found that it certainly did add the subtle harmonics needed to liven up the tone.

I read online that many people thought that while this preamp is decent for the price, merely switching out the stock chinese vacuum tube can really enhance its tone. So I went to G***** C***** and purchased a replacement russian made groove tubes preamp tube and WOW, It really did make a huge difference!(the entire tube switching process took me about 4 minutes, i had never done such a thing before but it was very easy)

So while this is a nice little preamp, a simple $20 upgrade took the quality way above and beyond what you get out of the box.

5Best $100 I Ever SpentOct 14, 2008
By Thomas J. Mcguire
This tube preamp is amazing. What really makes it shine is the option to send as much or as little input audio through the tube. The effect is the right amount of microphone warmth for each job. The output gain has a really wide range, which means that I can drive the tube hard and still get pleasant audio out of the unit. One more thing - the TUBEPre is quiet, much quieter than anything else in this price class.

3Good budget preamp but OMG, replace the tube!!Jan 13, 2010
By Abramelin
// REVIEW //
This is a halfway decent preamp for $100 but do yourself a favor and IMMEDIATELY replace the tube in it. It comes with some Chinese piece of junk tube that will make your lead vocal sound like my cat hissing and farting into a tin can. Try a Sovtek 12ax7 or a JJ -- I like the Sovtek but feel free to ask the opinion of your local tone junkies.

// HOW TO SWAP THE TUBE //
1. Remove all the screws and pop the silver plates off of one or both sides
2. Pull the black metal casing off
3. Gently rock the glass tube back and forth to remove from the white thing it's plugged into. Be sure to apply a bit of counter pressure...
4. Pop in the new tube
5. Put the casing back together.
6. Write to Presonus and politely suggest that they pony up the $12 for a better tube so that people such as myself don't give their product 3 stars instead of 4.

If you're noticing that the tube is breaking up really easily, well, you get what you pay for! These things just don't have the voltage you'll find on higher end preamps. I usually find that putting the Drive knob (which controls the tube) at about 9 o'clock and the Gain knob at 1 o'clock gives me good volume and a touch of tube warmth without distortion or hiss. I'm using this thing with an AT4040 and I'm pretty happy with the results considering that I've heard the same mic through much more expensive preamps before...

5Affordable, Gets the job done!Feb 29, 2008

If you need the audio boost....but don't have many bucks...the mono tube mic is the way to go!
I used it until I was able to move on...but it served me well...Still use it from time to time.

4Hard To Beat If Coupled w/ A Tungsol Tube Upgrade (15 bucks)Nov 02, 2011
By Grateful Fred
I recently purchased a Rode NT2-A microphone. While it is a pretty nice, warm, smooth and versatile mic...it seemed to lack the fullness I had hoped for. Perhaps it was the Zoom R24 Multrack I was plugged into, I'm not sure. But when I ran the Rode through this pre-amp, suddenly the full sound I was looking for was all there with room to spare. There is a little hiss with the TubePRE stock tube depending on how much you saturate it, but I dropped in a Tungsol 12AX7 replacement tube which is less than 15 bucks. The sound is now extremely smooth, warm, rich, full & quite. I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't for having to replace the tube. In hindsight, I wished I would have spent a little more and got the 2-channel version of this pre-amp, the Blue Tube DP. No worries, I'll have one of each.
