4Faderport vs AlphatrackAug 12, 2008
By Jason Basmajian "Jason Andrew"
If you're looking to get away from mixing with your mouse and are looking to spend as little as possible... there are two big choices. PreSonus Faderport ($150) and Frontier Design Alphatrack ($200).

Faderport - PROS: PreSonus put most of their money into the fader... it's an alps fader used in many higher end consoles.
Nothing fancy. It is intuitive and to the point, but still has what I want and need... a good fader and transport control.
Easy to install.
Small.

CONS: Wall-wart. It is bus powered, but you need the AC adapter for fader automation.
You can only automate volume and pan. (protools user's! If you have a track selected with the faderport with pan automation, protools will lock to the pan control of the faderport and will not play back the written automation until you switch to another track. This is a known issue that PreSonus says they are working on for an upcoming firmware update.)

Alphatrack - PROS: Controls; volume, pan, EQ, plugins, and automation.
3 encoders instead of 1.
Jog and shuttle strip... (this is really cool.)
Bus powered.
LED screen with track/eq/plugin info.

CONS: NOT Intuitive... It took the guy at G***Center over 30 minutes just to get it to do anything. And after another 30 minutes could only get the fader, pan and transport controls to work. (I never did get to automate any plugins with it.)
The fader was sluggish and when it played back the automation in kinda shook and was loud. (check out youtube.com "faderport vs alphatrack" and see a side by side comparison.)
The LED screen was hard to navigate through and the user programmable controls (which only work with native software, not HUI emulation) are labeled F1- F8 which may take a while to remember.
Slightly bigger then faderport.

OVERALL: I went with the faderport. While there are a few quirky things I've had to deal with (in protools, so far it has worked great with sonar) it's still straight forward, serves its purpose and does what I need it to do. It gives me the ability to feel and touch a mix. The transport controls alone make it a great asset, not having to reach for the mouse every time I want to arm, mute, solo or record a track. As for the alphatrack, the fader on it alone was enough for me to steer clear. But, the fact that it was a fight to get it to work at all (and never saw it fully functioning) put me over the edge... I fight with enough stuff to keep everything running.

5A must have for small desktop studiosOct 23, 2008

Buying the Faderport has probably been one of the greatest improvements to my ProTools workflow. I have a fairly simple PTLE set-up and have been doing everything with a mouse for about the last year and a half. Adding the FaderPort has improved the efficiency of my recording and mixing exponentially.

I primarily bought this unit for the fader and this has certainly improved my mixing control, but some of the other controls are what have really helped me. Having dedicated hardware for transport control is awesome. I love being able to arm a track, set record, and hit play all in one physical location. Also, the undo button is great when perfoming multiple takes on a difficult part. Lastly, having buttons for switching between the mix and edit windows is very, very useful.

The interface is very intuitive and well built. I had a few issues getting it to be recognized properly (turns out to be a PC/Windows OS issue), but once I got it installed I was able to start using it effectively with pretty much no instruction.

If you are still mixing and controlling PT with a mouse, I strongly recommend that you look into one of these great units.

5Finally out of the stone age!!!!Feb 19, 2009

The PreSonus FaderPort is one of the best products I've bought lately. As you may know, mixing by using a mouse can be very stressful, but wit this tool it becomes an amazing experience. The limitations are minor and not a show stopper in any way. I know, we would all like to have 16 channel controller, but we don't all have the money to invest in such a dream, but with the PreSonus FaderPort, I suddenly see myself a little bit cooler while recording.
It works great with Logic. As soon as connected, the FaderPort starts working. I've also used it with Prootools, and had no problems either.
Great buy, great price, great product!!!

2Great product but terrible software support.Mar 24, 2011
By Adgold90
The main reason for getting the faderport was to be able to remain in my vocal booth and constantly undo and redo recordings without having to jump out and hit play on my computer every time.

When I first got the machine, I was working on Vista 32-bit. From the start, I had problems getting my computer to recognize it and use it within Pro Tools 7.4. After many hours of troubleshooting and tech support, I finally got it to work. Then I upgraded my computer to a Windows 7 64-bit. Again, I had some major issues and then finally got it to work. I had to unplug ALL midi devices, use a USB powered hub, and had to install the firmware update using another computer. It eventually worked.

I upgraded computers again to another Windows 7 64-bit and it (of course) did not work with the firmware update and all solutions mentioned above. Never got it to work, and every time I called tech support, they had no reasons or fixed. It became a paper weight. I was desperate and was thinking about getting the alphatrack.

After months of being a paper weight, I yet again got another AMAZING PC computer with Windows 7 64-bit. BRAND NEW EVERYTHING! Still didn't work and neither did the firmware update which it says should work for Win 7 32 or 64-bit systems.

I thought maybe it was the faderport so I opted for getting a new one from guitar center and lo and behold, IT DIDN'T WORK!!!

New computer (two of them), and and new faderport without any luck. And trust me, I tried every Google search and possible solution with no fix. I have given up. The tech support told me last week that they will now do testing and try do come out with a new driver. That is a flat out lie to my face and to everyone. This has been a well known issue for over 2 years and NO ONE and presonus has updated a thing.

Bottom line, this product was AMAZING when it worked and did everything it was supposed to. I strongly urge people to NOT get this if they have Windows 7 64-bit or I think ANY 64-bit system for that matter. It's a real shame that the guys at presonus are lazy. This was a great product and now I have to look elsewhere.
