4Accurate if you first adjust it...Aug 25, 2007
By Victor H. Agresti "remodeling-guy"
Pelouze PELY50 50 lb. scale

The scale's weighing platform and support are stainless steel, the body of the scale is aluminum, the bezel frame is steel, and the dial bezel is polycarbonate.; it's an attractive device.

The only adjustment on this scale is to choose where the needle will point at the at-rest position. You'd think the only appropriate point would be zero, but the needle can be set anywhere from negative 3 pounds to positive 3 pounds. This is FAR more than needed.

To verify scale accuracy, I weighed various York bar-bell plates (from 1 1/4 lb. to 25 lb.). Since York plates are used in some weight-lifting contests, I figured their plates are accurately manufactured. All plates indicated a weight of about 3 oz. high. Yet, when a plate was on the scale and another plate was added, the increase indicated was the right weight for the 2nd plate. To get accurate readings on these plates then, my scale had to be set, and left at, 3 ounces below zero. Set this way, a York 25 lb. plate resulted in an indicated weight of exactly 25 lb. Bottom line: the scale is accurate for things weighing between one and 50 pounds.

For consistent readings, the thing to be weighed must be centered on the platform; i.e., so it doesn't pull the mechanism forward, backward, or to one side. Using that approach, our scale provides the same readings for the same package, every time.

With only 3/8" between pound readings, this scale's maximum accuracy is about 2 ounces. There are 8 lines per pound (per 3/8"), or 1 line per 2 ounces. I'm considering buying a second scale, for weighing things up to 2 lbs. That, plus this one, for weighing things up to 50 lbs., and a bathroom scale for the heaviest items, should be all we'd ever need.

5Works for me!Jun 01, 2008

I bought this for weighing UPS shipments. It seems pretty accurate to what their scales say. It's solid and doesn't take up much space. I'd recommend it.

1Not good for weighing thingsAug 22, 2008
By Brian Morris
I purchased this to weigh boxes for shipment that are over 5 pounds, because I have access to a 5 pound electronic scale. I got really concerned when weighing a box, it got two different weights when trying twice. I had no idea which was right. I got 7.2 lbs, 6.5 lbs, and less. I assumed it was the highest, so I paid for over 7 lbs. At the post office, it weighed in at 6 lbs 10 oz.

It seems to weigh different depending on how much forward or backward pressure is put on the platform.

I highly recommend Ultraship 55 Lb Electronic Digital Shipping Postal Kitchen Scale, especially if Amazon stocks it again.

Extremely accurate! Don't trust any of those cheap knock-offs out there... buy the real deal!

2cheapo - returned itNov 21, 2010

I purchased this scale primarily to weigh out ingredients for mixing materials for small scale concrete projects (e.g. concrete counters), but after opening the box you can immediately tell this is not a high quality item. The whole thing feels tinny, lightweight, and flimsy. To assess the accuracy I used various free weights from an olympic set, everything from 2lbs to 35lbs, and I would rarely get the same weight 2x (ie, totally inaccurate). I thought that maybe this unit was just a defect, but then I also felt like it just was not a high-quality product so I just returned it. Instead I purchased the larger 250lb metal (flat) scale from Pelouze. It seems to handle weights more consistently.
