3Works well as an eBook reader. Inadequate for anything elseOct 23, 2011
By NLee the Engineer
As a color eBook reader, the Pandigital Novel (R70E200) seems like a great value. One obvious factor is its lower cost, since you can get a factory remanufactured unit for around 1/3 the cost of a B&N NOOK Color. In addition, there are also other minor factors to consider:

- The Novel's display (resolution 800x600) has an aspect ratio of 1.33 to 1, while the NookColor's display has wider aspect ratio of 1.7 to 1. So although they all have the same diagonal length of 7 inches, the Planet's screen is actually 10% larger in area! As an eReader, this larger area is a big advantage. On the other hand, a wider screen is better for viewing movies.

- The Novel is very lightweight when compared to NookColor: only 7 oz instead of 15 oz. So it is more comfortable to hold with just one hand while reading. Note that the Amazon product description page says '12 oz', but that is the weight of the previous WHITE model (PanDigital 72-70FW). The BLACK model is slightly smaller and much lighter.

- The Novel comes pre-installed with the NOOK eReader app. You can easily install other free eReaders (such as 'FBReader'), then go to 'Project Gutenberg' site and download free eBooks to your heart's content. Unfortunately, the Amazon Kindle app is NOT compatible with Novel.

On the other hand, there are many limitations you need to know about the Novel, especially if you intend to use it as a Multimedia Internet Tablet:

- The Novel has a slow processor (800MHz single-core) and very limited RAM (256MB). This makes it PAINFULLY SLOW in doing any task, even when entering text using the Android keyboard.

- Its resistive touch screen is very sluggish. You have to PRESS DOWN and HOLD for about 0.5 second for it to register any click. It works reasonably well when using the included stylus, though.

- Novel runs an ancient Android 1.5 operating system. So most new apps are not compatible. It comes with a 'SlideMe' market place, which has very limited selection of apps. That means NO ANGRY BIRDS! You can forget about running YouTube, Amazon Appstore and Google Android Market as well.

- The included video player has very limited capability. It is supposed to support MP4, but only in SP (simple profile). I have tested many MP4/AVI files on it and most of them cannot be decoded. Even those few files that can replay still suffer from jerky motion.

- Its battery life is quite pathetic at just 3-4 hours (manufacturer claims 6 hours). Then it takes another ~6 hours to fully recharge.

[Conclusion]
The Pandigital Navel makes a very good, inexpensive color eBook reader. But if you expect to use it as a multimedia internet tablet, you'll be sorely disappointed. Still, consider its present low price, it could serve as an introductory product to the world of Android tablets. Just don't expect it to perform like the real thing. If you want to step up to a passable tablet without spending a lot, consider the Pandigital Planet R70A200 instead.

4Pandigital NovelSep 26, 2011

After debating to go with a Kindle or other e-reader I thought I would give the Pandigital a shot. Save some money and get a little more than just an e-book. I am happy with my purchase. The Novel works well. Not as fast as other e-readers or tablets on the market but fine for what I am using it for, books. The text is very clear and of course you can zoom in or out to suit your needs. Menus are easy to figure out and navigate.

5Pandigital Novel Perfect For SchoolOct 17, 2011
By jc
I purchased this Pandigital Tablet to use in college. I was looking for an easy and economical way for to save money on textbooks. I am so glad I made the decision to purchase this tablet! It is easy to use and I am not weighing myself down carrying heavy books on my back. Someone mentioned that they were slower than others on the market yet I haven't really noticed. I have spent several hours using the tablet reading my textbooks without the battery going dead. I have taken breaks from my homework to surf the web, check email and chat with friends on facebook. I am a bargain hunter, thrifty to the core. At this price it is a real deal!

5Pandigital vs NookNov 29, 2011
By Amelia
So I am a miser and don't like spending money and spent over a month trying to choose an ereader (lots of free books out there). While out shopping one day with my mother in law I spotted the Novel and long story short she purchased one for me. She has a Nook Color and after seeing myself then my father in law playing with our Novels, surfing the net finding multiple sites where we could download books that she couldn't figure out how to get to she tried to get one of us to trade her. Hands down I love the Novel. Yes it is slow on the internet but much easier to use then the Nook. As for the touch screen I have long fingernails and they work fine, and my husband who has no nails seems to have no problem turning pages with his finger although does have to use the stylist to type on the keyboard. The 2 bad things about the Novel, first, you have to press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn it on and sometimes have to do that a couple of times before it boots up, second, it does not like reading the SD card, but once again try it a couple times and it eventually gets there, although I have downloaded hundreds of books and a large # of pics and still have not used all of the memory so don't need the SD yet. Also another plus, Pandigital is a great digital photo frame. While at work when I can't ready I use the picture gallery's slide show option and get to see all of my favorite photo's without cluttering up my desk. I have had mine since June and still love it, now my husband wants one for Christmas and I think I will be getting one for him so he will leave mine alone and that is saying something since the cheapest one I have found is here and its $90 although that is a lot less then the $130 my mother in law paid for mine.

5Pandigital NovelNov 14, 2011
By Ernest P. Sawinski
I am very pleased with the Pandigital Novel. It has done everything I expected of it. I had a problem with the power switch and emailed Pandigital. They returned my email and asked me to call the service department. It was determines that my unit was defective. He suggested that because I had the tablet less than 30 days I return it where I bought it, but if I did not wish to do that I could return it to Pandigital. I phoned World Wide Dist. and they promptly emailed return instructions, and in about one week I have received a replacement unit. I should add, that I was given the option of a refund or replacement.

I am pleased both with the tablet and the service I received.
