Garbage - do not buyMay 15, 2010
These units are deeper than a standard electrical box. The wire connectors are only deep enough for 1/4" of wire, thereby guaranteeing that the wires will pop out over and over again when you try to fit the unit into an electrical box (and good luck doing that - these things leave NO room in the box for your speaker wires). The instructions are unintelligible - tables where you need to look up a jumper setting based on the number of speakers actually refer to PAIRS of speakers, but you can only work this out by reading and re-reading the garbled examples. To mount the unit in a decora box, you have to attach a plate that does not fit at all securely. A colossal hassle overall - AVOID.

this did what I expected. It did reduce the maximum volume a little, which I had expected, and the wiring was tough with 14 guage. I ended up using a thinner wire for the attachment. For my set up, I ended up making a box and using a different decorative plate color which worked out great for my set up. I am thinking of buying more for my other speakers.

Stay out of Best Buy. This products have been GREAT for our home sound system. We had our house prewired when we built it and went to Best Buy to get "the stuff we needed" Thankfully we went home to measure again and decided to check Amazon. For a THIRD of what we were going to spend we are now set with a great home system. We aren't going to blast the speakers for hours and days anyway. These systems are for background music and they do wonderfully.

I bit difficult to put in the proper space. Pay attention, the unit is very deep, almost twice the regular box so measure first before buying the control.

I have another volume control from radio shack and this one is much better. The radio shack one I installed a couple years ago, and while it performs just fine, there aren't as many volume click positions and the places to screw down the wire into the unit were TERRIBLE. This one installed very quickly, is made very solidly (you have to push pretty hard to get it into a standard box - my only real 'complaint').

Also, keep in mind this is low voltage wiring so you don't need to use a 'real' box to put in your wall. You can get boxes with the back of them cut-out already (plastic or my favorite is a thin metal). This enables you to screw the unit to the thin ring but allows the unit all the depth it needs due to having not back to the box at all. Look for 'low voltage wiring box' and save yourself effort of hacking a high voltage box to pieces.

And I haven't seen any volume issues ... this thing allows all the volume that my speakers can possibly handle (running 2 pairs of Axiom M3s on A/B).
