4highly Recommended!!!!Jun 27, 2010
By Christopher "Kiyo - Kun"
I've been searching, tediously for a wide format scanner for over a year and the cheapest I could find that worked with Windows 7 was and an Epson for $1,047. And Honestly I couldn't afford that. I'm a freelance cartoonist who works on large sized Bristol. I gave up hope and desided to save some money to purchase that Epson in a few months.
Then out of nowhere Mustek comes out with an upgrade to their old wide format scanner. For only [...] bucks, I was in awe to see its specs and price. I ordered it right away, almost not thinking twice. The Software is a bit confusing, but if you worked with any kind of scanner in the past it isn't impossible to grow accustom to. It looks nice and isn't an eye sore as a lot of others were. But more importantly was the quality of scanning. I took out an old comic page and scanned it as soon as I had it connected and the software was installed.
The only thing I am a little disappointed in was that you can't select the DPI specifically. It has 3 settings, "Normal" "Fine" and "Very Fine. I'm assuming very fine is the 2400 DPI that was listed on its specs. Honestly that's my only complaint as of now... I had it for going on one week and I'm very pleased with it.
Once you have the software completely installed, you don't even need to open up the program when you want to scan. You simply have to open the scanners lid and PRESTO! The program automatically loads on screen. It scans pretty quickly as well, my pages are highly detailed with hatching and values, it takes roughly 30 seconds per page and all I have to do it load it into Photoshop and touch it up a little as I always to with any scan and the image is perfect. It also has some sound effects that remind me of a lot about Samsung Products, You know it has a retro sounding NES feel to it, which I personally like and think it an interesting touch.
I give this a 4/5 because... The DPI settings is a little confusing, the physical frame is a little delicate frame and because I rarely give out 5's. But I'd rather save the 700 - 1500 bucks and get this then a 5 star Epson. I haven't heard much of Mustek and this is my first product of theirs, but as far as I can see it's a very promising company which made a promising product that saved me a butt load of cash. And this Artist recommends it, especially for you comic artist out there looking for a cheap but good big boy scanner.

1Poor quality scanner.Feb 04, 2011

This is only helpful for artists who are looking to get a fairly accurate and quality scan. If you are looking to scan paper text documents then you should consider trying this scanner. I've worked with large format Epson scanners on a regular basis to digitize artwork for giclee reproduction with excellent results. So this was my baseline for trying this scanner.

As a test, I took a beautiful piece of woven fabric I got from El Salvador (Think Guatemalan Vibrant Colors). I scanned the textile at 100, 200 and 300 dpi at maximum bits and reviewed them in Photoshop, making sure all color spaces matched up. What I saw was a quick loss of details whenever the material was not against the glass. The scanner has a very narrow focal plane and anything with texture such as canvas quickly went fuzzy and produced a neutral gray. Overall, this loss of focus severely dulled the vibrant colors. Secondly I noticed the scanner had tremendous problems capturing accurate colors, especially magentas. Reds and magentas looked like dull oranges. Overall very muddy colors.

The scanner renders too much noise cannot perform for art reproduction. Sharp contrasting lines also caused noise and haloing around the edges. With it being unable to capture artwork, it was back in the box the same night.

I hope this helps in your decision making. I never take the time to write a review.

3A SOMEWHAT COMPETENT SCANNERJun 12, 2010
By Robert M. "Robert M."
I've owned several scanners over the last 20 years. I bought this particular scanner via Amazon because I wanted something that will handle a full size book conveniently.

As far as scanning goes, this does a very nice job. It's reasonably quick, and with an optical resolution of 2400, this machine will do a credible job of just about anything you care to scan. As I'd hoped, the large platen allows me to lay out a full size book and capture both pages at once. It will scan in full size pages of sheet music without requiring you to stitch together images made with multiple scans of different parts of the page. I've also scanned the cover art from DVD's, and have been pleased with the results.

Mustek's downfall is their choice of software that comes included with the equipment. The programs for scanning have a limited utility, cannot make full use of the scanner's capabilities, and are so poorly documented it's nearly impossible to store your images in any location other than the default "My Pictures".

Worst of all, I haven't been able to locate a driver that works with the older Windows XP operating system. Technical Support at Mustek were unable/unwilling to help me. I was told there was no driver available for this model that is compatible with Windows XP, and that they have no plans to create one.

The driver did install correctly on my Vista laptop. But that machine has less power and memory than my older, XP desktop.

I just downloaded the driver for the A3 USB 1200, and plan on trying to install that, then hack into the registry to manually change the values that differ between the two models.

If you're looking for a large format scanner to use with Windows XP, either look elsewhere than at Mustek, or stick with their lower priced, ScanExpress A3 USB 1200 model.

3Almost ready for prime timeDec 10, 2010
By Mark D. Wagner "integrate design | build"
Being an architect and designer, I needed a large bed scanner for scanning sketches, graphics, photos, you know the usual. I've used the Epson Expression 10000XL quite a bit and suppose I have been spoiled by that but couldn't justify shelling out that kind of cash at the moment. That said, the Mustek is a fairly competent scanner and the bottom line is you get what you pay for.

The biggest gripe is the software UI for the scanner...it is a HUGE joke and Mustek should really be ashamed for letting it go to market like that. There is no documentation in the UI (no Help menu) and no indication on how to change the scan destination location. There is no option for descreening (the annoying artifacts similar to a moire effect that you get from scanning magazine images and lower print quality books) which you will find on the Epson software. (Honestly though, the Epson doesn't entirely remove it either). Other scanner controls are woefully basic and seriously lacking for this size of a scanner. Come on Mustek...you have to realize that people in the market for a scanner of this size tend to have higher demands/needs than t typical home user...know your market, know your audience. In my opinion there is no excuse for this.

I believe the best way to utilize this scanner is through the WIA/TWAIN interface you would see in a graphic editor like Photoshop and if you can find a way to do it, I would recommend installing the driver ONLY from Mustek's website as someone else has mentioned. I heeded the advice of previous comments to not install anything from the included CD and went directly to Mustek's website for the most current software. I was interested in seeing if they had resolved the problem that a previous comment had mentioned about the B/W gray line syndrome and to Mustek's credit, they did resolve that. One minor annoyance (for myself since I think the scan software is a joke) is that the when you open the lid of the scanning bed, it launches the software.

Okay, done with the bashing, now for it's redeeming qualities.

It's a MUCH quieter scanner than its predecessor, the Mustek Scanexpress 1200, and is on par with the Epson. The glass platen is not flush with the scanner frame which for me is not a deal breaker as it gives me something to register the edge of the scanned material against...for someone else that may be a gripe, a matter of personal preference. Other than the aforementioned lack of descreening control, the scan quality is pretty comparable to the Epson. Bottom line is that for the money, this is a good buy, assuming you can get around some of the annoyances mentioned.

5BIGGER BANG SURPRISE-NEW PAGE EXPRESS A3 USB 2400 PRO WITH LED LAMP!!!Nov 12, 2010
By Cheese and Chocolate
I was looking for an A3 scanner to scan cartoons and my nice TMOQ inserts of my old LPs back from the 70ties (LP scans are quite a problem, as they measure exactly 31.5cm x 31.5cm and no A3 scanner is that big, the TMOQ art sheets just fit perfect with this scanner) all Epson stuff in that size IS too expensive and buying an old Microtek...you never know how long they last with all the lamp issues out there...I then saw the advertised Mustek ScanExpress A3 2400 USB Pro and I ordered at pixmania.com ex France (as I cannot buy this item from amazon.com) for about 200.-- Swiss Francs. (At pixmania this scanner goes under "must" which is also written like this as package box logo, not Mustek, and then on scanner cover it's logo is Mustek again) My thoughts were, if it doesn't fit to my needs, I could easy resell it on ebay. In the box was the new Page Express A3 2400 Pro with LED lamp (ckeck mustek.com.tw - HQ site). This boy is pretty quick, indeed. The software from Mustek, Version 1.1 has a too small prescan window, but all filters, like USM, blur UnSharp Mask, the color adjustments 48bit, 24bit, CMYK, 256 color, gray 16bit, DPI 100-9600 and custom adjustment, etc do work quick and well on my Windows XP Pro. ***INSTALL THE SCANNER DRIVER 1.1 (File Version 14.0.0.162) ONLY !!! OFF THE MUSTEK CD, NOTHING ELSE - YOU WILL ONLY NEED THE MUSTEK SCANNER DRIVER TO GET THE MUSTEK SOFTWARE WORKING AND DO THE REST WITH THE PHOTOSHOP - if you got an older driver version than 1.1 on CD get the new driver from mustek.com or mustek.com.tw, HQ site*** - I work with the Mustek software through Photoshop CS3 Extended import only and additionally, I can import the Mustek scanner through WIA support as well and can adjust the prescan window as big as my 24" screen allows - This was indeed a great buy
