3Some tools good, others not so muchMay 13, 2008

Leatherman. A name that has gone hand in hand with the term multitool for 25 years now. While they have created a great many wonderful products, not all can be first among equals.

This brings us to the Juice CS4, Leatherman's foray into the world of pocket tools. I had this tool for about 2 or 3 months, putting it through the paces until ultimately decided I liked larger tools better.

First off, the good. I like the variety of tools available on the small frame. It's a tad heavy, but not terrible. The pliers are good for light to medium duty work. The blade was nice and sharp out of the clam pack. And I really like the awl. And most of the important tools open from the outside, while the pliers are closed. That's an A+ feature right there. The scissors are 'okay' too, nearly on par with SAK scissors. However, all is not well in paradise.

The blade, while a respectable 2.75" and perfectly usable, I could not find a away to enjoy it. The shape was a contorted spear-point that seemed too thin on the profile and the spine. Same with the saw; it's just flimsy.

Also annoying is the can opener. It doesn't work; too dull. Additionally, it has to be extended in order to access the corkscrew. A minor complaint, but still worth noting. Same with the awl/saw; the awl must be extended in order to open/close the sorry excuse for a saw.

Finally, the screwdrivers. While they are perfectly usable, they are a bit too short for my liking. The phillips head driver is more of a nub than anything else.

It's a good idea to have a pocket multitool like this. But at 50 bucks a pop, you're better off spending a few more dollars and getting a full sized multi tool.

5I love this thingJul 13, 2005
By Ask Bjørn Hansen
It's about the size of a regular swiss army knife, but feels much more durable and practical.

I had been considering a Leatherman Wave (you should look at the new Charge tool too if you are considering the Wave), but always thought it was too big and bulky to carry around.

The CS4 is perfect for an everyday-tool to carry with you.

Leatherman makes a series of "Juice" tools, you can see a list of them and what features they have at their website. To me the CS4 was the best combination of bulk and features.

4Four stars for the tool - five for AmazonApr 20, 2007
By Matthew Wien
The first one I ordered broke on the second day I had it - the bottle opener cracked in half after opening two bottles. Not too encouraging. I contacted Leatherman, thinking their customer service would be better than Amazon, and that they'd want to know about the defect in the product. Not really. I received a quick reply to the effect that I could ship it back to them at my expense, then wait a couple of weeks for repair or replacement.

Amazon to the rescue - my first experience with their customer service, and it was great. After filling out the online return form, they immediately shipped a replacement overnight, and provided a return label for me to ship the broken tool back at their expense. Excellent - even easier than returning something to a local store.

I've put the replacement (including the bottle opener!) through the paces with no problems - chalk it up to a random defect. Design of this tool is excellent: small enough to carry in a pocket with most of the useful accessories in the bigger Leathermans. I recommend it - just don't open your bottles too vigorously!

4My current choice of pocketable multi-toolSep 19, 2010
By S. T. Koo
After getting a keychain tool for my wife (Victorinox Manager), I have also considered getting a decent multi-tool myself and this has caused weeks of sleepless research.

My initial conclusion (after reading reviews, watching videos on the internet and seeing the knives in person at various retailers), I thought a good balance between weight, size and functionality would be the Victorinox Climber plus (as recommended by someone from youtube). However, after receiving the SAK, I have realised it doesn't offer much more practical tools than my wife's Manager for its size. While there is no doubt the Climber is a lightweight pocket knife with really decent build quality, I was disappointed with the number of practical features it has on offer for its size (sorry - a hook? 2 knives but no saw/serrated blade?). So shortly after getting my brand new Climber, I've decide to sell it and restart my search for an ideal multi-tool.

So I have put more emphasis on functinoality the second time around. For my living, I have to travel a lot and deal with computers a lot. So tools such as Philips and pliers (with wire cutter) quickly become part of the selection criteria. This criteria has quickly narrowed the choice down to a few SAK and Leatherman. For SAK, I was looking at the 91mm models such as Cybertool and Handyman or the 110mm Hercules or Tradesman. The Hercules in particular has absolutely everything I need and nothing extra and was a particularly attractive model. However, with a hefty weight and size (particularly thickness) - it has been ruled out. Another reason for me to not consider SAK is their pliers .... they're more of an accessory than a real pair of pliers. (Swisstool Spirit would also be nice, and has been considered briefly too, but it'd probably be a bit bulky to carry in pocket).

Hence, I'm left with Leatherman's Juice series. Why Juice? Well, given that I feel the Climber is a very pocketable knife size-wise, I'll be looking for MT of similar size. While Leatherman did not reveal the dimension (particularly thickness) of the Juice, I have been visiting stores and gathered that the CS4 is slightly (1mm) thicker than a 3 layer Climber, and S2 is slightly thicker than a 2 layer SAK.

While lots of people accuse Leatherman's Juice being very pricey, and I tend to agree from a monetary perspective, I have managed to convince myself to consider Juice with these perspectives:
1) It offers almost the same number of features as a SAK Hercules and cost roughly the same (on ebay - brand new)
2) It is much smaller than ther Hercules and I'd have more chance bringing it with me in my pocket. (Its no use to have a fully featured MT but not bringing it due to inconvenience).

The Juice surely has its drawbacks. It weighes considerably more than an SAK of similar size and reading other reviews suggests that there could be build quality issues with Leatherman's Juice - but I guess I can only find out when I get one.

My struggle does not end here though. As we all know, the Juice has plenty of variations in its lineup and picking one absolutely right for myself is still rather tricky.

It was a shootout between the S2 or CS4 for my needs (its a shame they don't do SC2 anymore). After weighing up price/features/weight, it still ends up with a tie. Given that this multi-tool will be serving me while I'm overseas, its probably better to play it safe and carry slightly more (the saw and corkscrew) with a penalty of 30 grams- hence I've opt for the CS4 - for now.

After receiving the good, my impression of the CS4 is... its ever so slightly thicker than a Climber, a hell lot heavier (while still pocketable) and packed with features. It stayed in my pocket since I had it and it doesn't add too much bulk to my EDC. See, while 150g+ MT isn't a v. light weight, my keyset, consist of 7 or 8 keys can easily weigh 100g. Hence personally, I don't feel the extra 150g I'm carrying. Size-wise, its very compact and I personally think the Juice is worth carrying in comparison to say the Victorinox Climber.

I could not help it but already started playing with all the features and I've discovered the following:

Pliers - must beat SAK hands down
Scissors - Probably not as good. While the opening is slightly wider, they don't seem to be as sharp (don't get me wrong, they're still sharp). But if I were to 'glide' along paper with the scissors opened, SAK is probably doing the same job much easier. Juice scissors has some degree of play, but its acceptable.
Awl - not particularly helpful when its blunt. Sure it can make holes, but hell, not particularly easy.
Can opener - although its blunt as, opening a can as it is would be perfectly ok.
Phillips - Love it, I think all pocket knives should have it. And remember, it has to be on the end of the knife, not in the middle like some SAK.
Knife - sharp and sturdy. Tie with SAK
Saw - cutting small blocks of wood with no issue. Pull saw is much easier to operate than SAK's version.
Corkscrew - yet to find a cork to scew
Screw drivers - functional - tie with SAK although it can really cut ur fingers if not careful. But its certainly not as stiff as others have complained.

Overall, CS4 is a solidly built MT. While the blades opening and closing has some play (unlike SAK's precision feel), it is acceptable. Certainly from a size/function ratio, it beats SAK IMO. My other complain is that 2 sides of the scale do not line up (by 1-2mm) - its insignificant, but kind of bugging me. Functionally, it delivers everything very well but not without flaws (hence only 4 stars - I couldn't give it 4.5). Perhaps they should use some alumnium to make the tool lighter and make sure every bit would work as it's sold, but its ok as it is now.

The only thing I'm wondering is whether i should have considered S2 instead, but I guess the same will happen vice versa unless I buy them both.

I hope my experience in struggling to pick the right MT will help those of you who're still looking for a pocketable MT.

5Leatherman Juice CS4 Pocket Multi-Tool, Glacier BlueNov 13, 2007
By Jupiter Fomm "Balosc"
Great product - About the size of a std pocket knife, but heavier. It is robust, hard wearing and packed with useful tools.

Neat features include the ability to use knife, scissors, bottle opener and saw with out having to fully open the tool.
The 3 flat blade screw drivers and the X point driver make you feel as though you are using a normal screw driver, rather than a "pocket knife".
The scissors design is very good. They are very easy to use single handedly and can cut through more than you might expect.
I lost my previous Juice when traveling with work, and after about a week, I new I needed to replace it - nothing else I had was as compact and useful this.
