Works fine with Mac OS XApr 12, 2010

Some USB to parallel cables won't work with Apple OS X but this one will. Unfortunately the item's description does not mention OS X at all, but there's no need. Plug it in and it works. Throw the driver CD in the trash; if you have an Apple Mac you don't need to mess with drivers and other annoyances.

It gets better: If you have an Apple AirPort Base Station (Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule) the IOGear cable can be used to connect your printer to your wireless network. Plug it into the base station's USB port and your printer will magically appear in OS X's Print dialog under "Nearby Printers". For OS X versions earlier than 10.6 is will appear under Bonjour Printers.

With the release of Snow Leopard, Apple eliminated support for Appletalk. Fortunately my Appletalk printers also have parallel ports, so by using this cable I won't have to replace perfectly good printers when I upgrade to OS X 10.6.

(Update: I tried it with a new iMac running OS X 10.6.8. Works fine, including connecting using the Airport Express USB port.)

Just remember this cable is for printing only. The print function of multifunction printers ought to work but other functions such as scanning probably won't.

I bought this USB printer cable in order get rid of my parallel cable of my old printer. This USB cable works perfectly when I connect it to the printer and then to the computer. But when I tried to put it on the network (using my DI-704UP), the built-in print server in the router detects the printer but never prints. I have tried to resolve that but until now I have not been successful. I don't think the problem is with the cable. Overall I recommend this product.

I plugged the cable into my Windows 7 64-bit PC and an "Unspecified" device named 'ATEN UC-1284B' appeared under Control Panel/Devices and Printers. There were no Properties settings that I could modify to connect the actual printer to this USB connection. I had already added my old Panasonic KX-2130 dot matrix printer to my list of printers, but couldn't figure out what port to assign it to. On line searches led me to believe it was only good for Windows 98/Me! I called IOGEAR tech support and got it running in a few minutes. The trick was to assign the printer to the port named USB002, which is a Virtual Port for USB (I already had another printer assigned to USB001). If you look at Windows Device Manager, you'll see a device named 'USB Printing Support' under the heading of 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'. Unplug your cable and it disappears from the list.

After that I did a test print and it worked! Bottom line is that the device does work as a plug-and-play for Windows 7. It should also work on Vista. FYI, the driver CD-ROM is of no value for Vista/Windows 7. IOGEAR could have avoided a call if they had properly documented this. Their website has no info on the issue.

Not flawless on Mac OS X for meJun 04, 2011

I bought this based on some other reviews that said it worked fine on the Mac. Unfortunately, that hasn't been my experience. I got it to connect a new Mac Mini on 10.6.7 with an old HP LaserJet 5MP that works great but is so old it doesn't have USB. I connected it and it took a while for the Mac to recognize it: first as "ATEN" something then it hung and finally came back and said it was an HP LaserJet 5MP. I thought I was ok. The first print job went through fine. After a day or so, I ran into problems. Each new attempt to print resulted in the job being added to the queue, but not printing. I paused and resumed the print queue, power cycled the printer but the queue wouldn't budge. Finally, I disconnected the USB end of the cable from the Mac and then reconnected it and the jobs would print. We have to do this each time we want to print.

I shut down the Mac completely. After power up, I was able to send 2 jobs to the printer without having to pull the cable. I tried another job later and it was back to only putting it in the queue, but not printing.

I called IOGear tech support. They said the product isn't for Macs and wouldn't provide any support.

Although others have reported success here, I can't say it works flawlessly for me. I'd love to know if I'm overlooking something to get it working as well as it has for others.

9/18/11 Update:
I think I've found what I was overlooking: I had to explicitly set the driver. It was already on the Mac, just needed to be set manually. On Snow Leopard (10.6.x), from the Print & Fax panel in System Preferences, choose the printer and hit the "Options & Supplies' button. Then, on the Driver tab, hit the Print Using drop-down and select "HP LaserJet 5MP - Gutenprint v5.2.3" .
