4Big tool but very well made.Sep 09, 2009
By Pruitt Hall
Gerber has eclipsed the Leatherman Surge for the 'biggest' multi-tool award. It's funny as we watch multi-tools evolve; they're getting bigger, more feature laden and there's always something new on the horizon as the multi-tool category is one of the best sellers in the cutlery / tool industry.

Gerber and Leatherman duke it out pretty regularly. SOG Tools and a few others have followings (loyal ones, too!) but Gerber and Leatherman rule the roost on multi-tools. I own over 30 multis (I'm a collector) so I think I am qualified to give an opinion or two on the subject. And my main one on this particular tool is that Gerber has a solid winner and it's quickly become my 'go to' multi-tool.

The ability to flick the pliers out is underated in the civilian market, but the military knows it well. Almost all military users I've spoken with in the past decade praise the Gerber because of this feature alone. I've also heard remodeling contractors rave about it as well; it's just darned convenient when you're on a ladder and need to hold up something with one hand and have the tool flick to opening with the other hand. I've got to admit, I wasn't that big on it at first either, but once you get used to it, you DO get spoiled by it.

The other missed 'feature' on this tool was one I didn't even know about until someone showed me. If you'll give the locking safety levers a little flip in their 'release' direction, the smaller, outboard tools pop up a bit, giving very easy access to them. That's a darned nice feature, but I wish Gerber would point it out in their instructions.

Leatherman does have an edge (no pun intended) on the main knife blade as they use 154CM metal which is a premium knife steel. Leatherman's jaws also typically line up very, very good; I've used them as tweezers in the past. However, this new Gerber's jaws line up better than anything of Gerbers that I've seen in the past.

Another thing to consider is the robustness of this tool; the tool's frame is considerably thicker than the Leatherman's and even Gerber's own products; it's simply massive in that respect and inspires confidence.

Like others have mentioned, I'd have liked to have had a few more tools onboard, but they do offer a bit adapter and the nylon case that comes with the tool has a sleeve for that option, built-in.

Overall, I'd say this is the premier multi-tool on the market as of this date. I'd have given it five stars, but I still stubbornly refuse to unless a manufacturer gives us a tool that can be disassembled for cleaning. So far, only SOG encourages that and I salute SOG for doing so.

This is the GERBER Freehand Multiplier, I can't say anything more than it's big, sturdy, and ready to do anything you need it to do.

I bought this multi-tool because I needed something beefy to use without having to lug my usual tools around. This multi-tool fits the bill !!!. Too heavy for every day carry, but well suited to tackle your small, or sometimes large tasks.

5Great!Jul 20, 2007

I've had multi-tools for years, I keep up grading. This is the best so far. I really like the big size that's more comfortable for my big hands. I use this tool many times a day, every day on the job.
