4It DOES work! Here's HOW!Dec 09, 2009
By A. Thompson
This product is a good one for the beginning Spanish learner --- once you figure it out! The directions that come with the device are terrible, and the operation was not intuitive for me. However, once you know what to do, it is easy and works the way we all want it to. I called Franklin directly to find out the proper procedure.

* This device will SPEAK the word that is HIGHLIGHTED on the screen *

1. Type the word you want to learn in the language you know.
2. Hit "Enter".
3. Wait for the translation to appear on screen.
4. Hit "Enter" again. This will highlight the word you typed.
5. Now, use the arrow button to MOVE THE HIGHLIGHTING down to the translated word.
6. Once the translation is highlighted, hit "Speak" and it will say the word out loud for you with proper pronunciation!

I hope this helps.

2Franklin Youth Talking Spanish - English DictionaryJun 11, 2007
By L. Neff
Did not live up to our expectations at all. We have the English version of this, worked great for my visually impaired daughter. On that one, she can type a word, and the device not only pronounces the word, but speaks the entire definition, and it speaks the various other games and activities. She she can basically interact with all the features, since she knows the keyboard.

The Spanish-English does NOT work the same way. You type a word in English, "cat", it says "cat" (which you already know how to say). It prints "gato" on the lcd display, which is barely legible to a sighted person. It does NOT say "gato" or anything else. The manual says it can pronounce any highlighted word in a definition, but no words are ever highlighted! It CAN say "gato", if you type it in, but of course does not then say the English word "cat". So it cannot connect spoken English words with spoken Spanish words, and speaks no definitions. It only very minimally fulfils the "talking" part. So for us, it's pretty useless, while its English counterpart was quite useful.

3GOOD FOR THE PRICEMay 03, 2008
By L. V. Ramos "Navy LVR"
Great for those trying to learn English, si hablan espanol. The only problem I encountered is how much battery it consumes when the speaker is used to listen to the pronunciation. But it is a very practical and easy to use instrument and my sister loves it.

product is good but a lot of words are not included which makes it unreliable source of information

2I expected moreMay 22, 2008
By V.Paradis
I guess I expected a Spanish/English translation dictionary. I typed SIR, MISTER, LOVER,
and got no translation into Spanish for any of those words. Save your money, and don't buy
this product. Maybe other more expensive products are better, I am not going to find out.
Anyway, for translations of most languages, I recommend you goto Google for translations
of words and also phrases, it is much much more superior than this device, with the added
bonus that Google translations are free.
