5Ideal solution for sealing.Apr 19, 2012
By Robert J. Brownsberger "rbrownsb"
The V2840 is a solid food sealer. I went with this model because it has been a long standing model made by FoodSaver, so I know that parts will be available for years to come.
I have been using it for about 2 months now, and have gone through several rolls of 11" bags. So far I have not had any issues whatsoever.
There is a small 5x2" piece of styrofoam that is used for packaging during shipping, and it is in the drip tray. I leave that piece in all the time when not in use, I'm hoping that will keep the foam seals of the vacuum chamber from compressing prematurely leading to some of the complaints that I've seen with this model.
The fold down feature is nice for storing the unit, it makes the overall foot print alot smaller.
Cleanup is a breeze, if there is any. I've only had to clean up some crumbs and maybe some juice from the drip tray. Overall this is a very nice, dependable unit for a great price. I would buy it again, and I do recommend it for anyone looking for a vacuum sealer.
The bags can be on the pricey side, but there are alternatives if you look around.

5Outstanding like all their products I've used so far...Dec 09, 2011
By John S. Dean "John"
I picked this up to replace a smaller model I had that was two or three years old. The older one still worked just fine, but I was tired of pulling it out from my cupboards to use, then putting it back, and wanted something that stored the rolls inside of it just to make things easier. And this certainly does.

It's wider than my previous one was, and there's a button to depress on the right side in the back that lets the whole front part pivot upright to the vertical so that it uses very little cabinet space. That base that doesn't rotate is where the bag gets stored.

There's a cutter inside as well, manual, not automatic, so you can pull the roll out to the sealer, seal it, pull it out then for however large you want your bag to be, cut it, and then you're set to fill it up and seal it. No more having to handle the roll manually while doing things. Granted, it wasn't rocket science, but it sure is nice to just have another step taken out of the equation when you're doing a bunch of sealing.

Another thing I really like with the newer model is the drip tray - the old one was just this little U shaped tray that you had to push the end of the bag DOWN into, to hold it in place so it pointed straight down. This one has a lip, so you only have to slide it up there into it, no more forcing it down vertically (which would sometimes pop out of place before getting the heating unit lowered and locked).

It runs quicker than my older white one as well.

I was fortunate to get a deal from the manufacturer directly, and got this, several rolls of material, two leftovers canisters and a larger canister, all for double digit prices. I love the color, matches the theme in my kitchen perfectly.

I use it mostly for meat, buying large packages of chicken or beef, and breaking it up into smaller portions and sealing it up for freezing. Makes it so easy and keeps things fresh for so long, especially chicken...

5Top 5 purchases of my lifeApr 23, 2012
By haha052988
Late at night, I used to get mad munchies and drive to the only open food establishment nearby: McDonald's. It wasnt because I wanted fast food, it was because I wanted food fast. Now, I can have a healthy, hot meal in minutes--without having to put on pants.

Before I bought the foodsaver, I would rarely cook. When I cooked, I would typically do one large dish and eat the same leftovers meal after meal, afraid it would spoil. I wouldnt put it in the freezer because the freezer burn always cashed the texture and flavor. I'd end up throwing a lot of food out because it either spoiled or I got sick of it.

I love cooking, but it's impractical for one person. So I'd eat out a lot, which got expensive and unhealthy. The foodsaver solved all those problems: because I could cook large quantities, vacuum seal, freeze, then reheat without the freezer burn that accompanies porous plastic-wrapped foods, I stopped eating out and started eating healthier and saving money. Because I've saved so much money by cooking instead of eating out, I buy quality ingredients that taste better.

With the foodsaver, I cook a huge dish, pack it into small servings, then freeze. I've got 4 different dishes in the freezer right now. Whenever I'm hungry, a cheap, healthy, home-cooked meal is within minutes' time. Grab it from the freezer and pop it in the microwave (bags are microwave safe). And having variety is exciting.

With the frequency I ate at restaurants, my foodsaver payed for itself in two weeks. By cooking, I literally saved enough money in two weeks to pay for the machine itself.

Some people gripe about the price of the foodsaver wrapping material. There are lots of off-brand material merchants online that sell the material cheap. Also, foodsaver.com has great sales that make the material even cheaper than the off-brand.

You can also use it simply as a bag resealer. Tortilla chips and cereal bags seal and reseal over and over (they're different material than the foodsaver material).

If you get the machine, I highly recommend the wide-mouth mason jar sealer. It allows you to use the machine to vacuum seal mason jars. Vacuum-sealed mason jars are the Cadillac of Tupperware.

I keep my machine on the counter at all times (it folds up so it doesnt take much space). I can see how I'd forget to use it if I had to tuck it away and lug it out every use. I use mine a few times a day: resealing mason jars after eating leftovers, apricots, figs, bread, spinach, strawberries, cilantro, crackers, spices, cereal x 584793. Seal it all up and never ever worry about it going bad. My Corn Pops dont go stale anymore.

What used to be late-night [Big Mac, no pickles, medium fry] is now [slow-cooked pork shoulder, quinoa, bok choy], which is healthier and faster and cheaper and tastier and without the risk of getting pulled over...

4ony one flawApr 18, 2012
By RobertF
this vacuum sealer works great. It even reseals potato chip bags very well.
the one design flaw is the amount of waste on the bag when re/sealing.
It is about 3 inches. It has to do with the distance between where the suction feed is, and the sealing element.
It would be difficult to change or improve that gap the way it's designed.
That's the price for vacuum sealing I guess.

If you plan on sealing something that you want to be able to open and reseal, you need to leave 3 inches for each time you plan on resealing it.

If I could get mylar rolls for it that would make it perfect.
