3Scanner with limitations for Macintosh UsersFeb 20, 2010
By Danmoch "Dan"
I purchased the GT-S80 to replace my 1st generation Mac compatible Scansnap (fi-5110EOXM). I wanted a faster scanner (40 PPM vs 15) with better paper handling (less misfeeds according to at least one review comparing GT-S50 to Scansnap elsewhere.)
I used the GT-S80 for less than a day and returned it to Amazon. Here are the reasons why:
1. Speed. Even though the GT-S80 is rated at 40 ppm, when I load paper to scan and push the scan button, it would take about 15-20 seconds for the Epson utility that handles the scanning to activate and for the scan job to actually begin. Several sheets would feed quickly, then there would be a pause (several seconds) while the 5 or 6 sheets that had fed were being processed. Please note, I am using a 2009 Mac Pro 8 core 2.66 GHz Nehalem Xeon machine with 16GB of RAM. It's not a sluggish machine. The combination of the delay in starting and the pause each 5-6 pages significantly decreased any speed advantage the GT-S80 may theoretically possess.
2. Page misfeeds. My scans often consist of regular laser paper interspersed with thinner "NCR" pressure sensitive paper. The GT-S80 double fed these as often as my old Scansnap. Not only did it misfeed, even when I tried to turn on the ultrasonic double feed detection, the Epson would not detect double fed sheets.
3. LCD display on scanner doesn't show actual scan settings when used with Macintosh. When used with Windows PC's, the Epson GT-S80 will show the scan settings from the LCD display (resolution, simplex/duplex, etc), allowing the user to choose the job setting desired. On Mac, only JOB1, JOB2, JOB3...etc. are shown.
4. Confusing EpsonScan utilities. I also have an Epson V600 flatbed scanner (great scanner!) The Epson Scan utility that is compatible with the V600 is a different version than the one that is compatible with the GT-S80, although they look similar. Neither will recognize the other scanner. This is a bit counter intuitive. Of course, this isn't a problem if you don't use Epson Scan to do your scanning (using TWAIN or another scan utility.)
Anyway, I ended up returning the scanner to Amazon and bought a Scansnap S1500M, which I am much happier with than the GT-S80.

5GREAT SCANNERMar 05, 2010
By HomeOffice Guy
I do not often give feedback on products but in this case I must. I bought this scanner based on the reviews I read and expected greatness.....
It exceeded my expectations.

FIRST: This scanner is lighting FAST! There is no comparison between this scanner and a Multifunction scanner. This scanner scans so fast that you really do not believe it actually scanned until you see the scanned document on your computer. It also scans both sides at once - so if you are doing duplex scanning - there is no delay in scan time for scanning both sides.

SECOND: It is exceptionally easy to set up and to use. I had it up and running in less than 5 mins. and have scanned hundreds of documents already.

THIRD: It is feature rich. (a) It allows you to scan to pdf (and other formats but I mainly use pdf) in several quality modes, many formats (color gray scale....)...., (b) you can program the keys on the scanner so you do not have to scan via the computer and you can essentially set up one button scan capability, (c) It comes with OCR (d) you can do different levels of OCR / and scan processing. You can the OCR and document processing vs. speed settings to your liking...,

I cannot think of any feature they left out.

NUANCES: (a) It takes a second or two to communicate to with the computer to start each scan. It would be better if the scan setup was stored on the scanner so that the scan would start instantly after hitting the "SCAN" button. (b) the document storing and processing is done on the computer and it holds the scanner while this is done. So you have to wait for the computer to finish processing until you can scan again. It would be great if this had more internal memory so that it did not have to wait for the computer after scanning. For the price they should have included a few Gig of RAM to store the documents locally. If it had USB 3.0 that might improve things quite a bit. This could be a show stopper for many. But I have independent OCR software and to "independent post processing" most of the time. (c) The "Event Manager" allows you to set up 10 separate job settings on the scanner but they cannot be configured as completely as the SCAN interface software .... sometimes it is easier to just use the SCAN Interface Software. (d) It is not possible to rotate the 2nd page of a duplex scan. So if you have a landscape binder every other page will scan upside down. (e) a bit pricey

BUT ALL IN ALL - THIS IS A GREAT SCANNER. IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO A GOOD AMOUNT OF SCANNING - IT IS WELL WORTH THE PRICE!

3Fast scanning; SLOW outputJun 18, 2010
By D. Wong
I have both the GT-S80 and GT-S50. They are only fast at 200dpi: the GT-S80 is very fast and exhibits no pause between pages while the GT-S50 pauses after every page. At over 200 dpi their speed is just average.

Slow software: even at 200 dpi; during and after the paper intake, the software noticeably lags and I am running a Dual 3.2 GHz Quad-core Xeon Mac Pro with a SSD drive, which is not too slow with other software. There are three distinct stages showing progress bars: 1.Scanning Page 2.Processing data please wait 3.Saving Page. If you scan multiple pages the 2nd stage repeats a few to many times, which may pause the scanner to pause multiple times.

Uneven color: Scanning solid color background results in very uneven color in the result.

Basementjack's comment to Danmoch Dan's review states that Apple's own Image Capture software is faster. I tried and found it not only is not faster but creates files almost 20 times the size of that from Epson's own software. I scan at 200 dpi color a sample of 7 letter size pages with a few in solid color background. The Epson software generates a 2.7 MB file while the Image Capture output is 59 MB! The Image Capture output shows milder color without the unevenness but the size makes it not worth it.

Yes, the GT-S80 sucks in paper at a high rate of speed but what is the point if if it pauses to think often and you don't get the output soon after that? Overall I am OK that it serves its purpose but definitely not what I expect from a $800 scanner.

2Epson should be embarrassedOct 10, 2010
By Willy "Snakeman"
I bought an Epson GT-S80 because an online vendor had one as an open-box item for 20% off their regular sale price. It arrived without the driver disc, and with a constant "cover open" message - so much for "we test to make sure the equipment works". That problem was a sensor mount that was broken - fairly easy to fix with some super-glue. Now it would scan, but when the paper ran out, it would continue to try to scan. Turns out someone had popped off the paper-detect lever and put it back wrong. In a few minutes i had that problem fixed, and the scanner was working as well as it could.

For this discussion, I'll use the terminology Epson uses, calling every sheet of paper a "page". Actually, a sheet of paper has two pages, a front one and a back one, but let's stick with Epson for this review. Also, when I use document scanners, I've found that you can fill their hoppers and start scanning, you can add more paper just before the hopper empties and essentially scan continuously for literally hundreds of pages.

I tried it under Windows first, to give it a chance to shine. Epson rates it as 40 ppm/80 ipm B&W-200 dpi. They do not give ratings for any other conditions. I found that it actually did scan at 40 ppm/80 ipm for a while when scanning B&W 200 dpi, but after about 100 sheets of paper, it would scan 5 sheets, then pause for a count of two, then another five and another pause. After another 50 sheets or so, it would only scan four sheets before pausing for the count of two, then about 30 later it would only scan three sheets before its pause of two. At this point my scan was done, with 215 double-sided sheets scanned in. I didn't try a bigger document, but have the feeling eventually it would have slowed to scanning one page between the pauses. I did not try a large document on any of my other tests.

Next, I left the resolution at 200 dpi, but changed from B&W to greyscale. With just this change, initial speed dropped to about 30 ppm/60 ipm.

My next test was color, at 300 dpi. Speed for this was only about 20 ppm/40 ipm. I'm sorry, this is completely unacceptable. My Fujitsu S1500M is rated for 20 ppm/40 ipm while scanning in color at 300 dpi, though in actuality I've measured it scanning 21 ppm/42 ipm for over 400 images, only pausing every 50 pages or so, and only pausing for about one page count each time. I venture to say that with the 21 ppm and occasional pause, the overall speed exceeds the rated 20 ppm, easily.

Next, I connected it to my Mac Pro (quad core 2.66, 10 GB RAM), and scanning was abysmal. I started with B&W, 200 dpi, and speed seemed ok, right about 40 ppm/80 ipm, but within 20 pages, it slowed to where it scanned one page, then a progress-bar window came up that showed that page being processed, then scanning the next page, and again with the progress-bar. Speed was less that 20 ppm. I was too disgusted to bother to measure it.

I'm sorry, but this is not worth half of what Epson wants for it. I'm VERY surprised Epson would put this out, rated as it is. It's an embarrassment.

You want to buy a really good scanner? Buy Fujitsu. Unfortunately they don't make very fast ones for Mac owners, but when they rate them for a certain speed, they deliver. What does that mean? Take their 6130 - it's rated for 30 ppm/60 ipm when doing B&W or greyscale, OR COLOR, at 300 dpi. However, if you're willing to scan at only 200 dpi in B&W AND GREYSCALE, it will speed up to 40 ppm/ 80 ipm!
What about their 6140? Same kind of thing, rated at 40 ppm/80 ipm when doing B&W or greyscale, OR COLOR, at 300 dpi. However, if you're willing to scan at only 200 dpi in B&W AND GREYSCALE, it will speed up to 60 ppm/ 120 ipm! I wish more manufacturers were this conservative in their ratings.

If you have a Mac and want a faster scanner than what Fujitsu supports, the 6130 (Windows only) is supported by ScanTango. It's not a TWAIN driver, but it will let you scan to a folder on your Mac. I keep hoping Fujitsu sees the light soon and starts providing Mac drivers for all their scanners.
