4Great office/general printer - mediocre photo printerDec 04, 2009
By Taylor
This is an excellent printer for general use. Very nice design, cheap ink (generics readily available), good performance, Nice crisp prints. The problem is the color on photos is terrible. It either looks washed out, or laughably oversaturated depending on the settings used - but never close to what I see on the monitor. My older Epson is worse in every way compared to this printer, except it prints much more accurate looking photos. Sadly. 50% of what I use my printer for is photo prints, so this is going back. Not really advertised as a photo printer, so I should have known. Too bad because I love the printer otherwise.

Bottom line: General school, work, light office printer thumbs up. Photo and accurate color printing, thumbs down.

1Prints just ok, Scans low quality, Ink cartridges terribleMay 03, 2010
By M. Jefferson "mjefferson96"
I've had this printer for about 5 months now. The biggest down side to this model is the ink cartridges. If one cartridge is empty like blue or yellow, it will NOT continue to print just black or any other colors like my other printers do. It just shuts down all printing functions until you replace that cartridge, you are just dead in the water if you run out of any color ink. Most printers will continue to print using the remaining colors, not the case here. Tech support confirmed this also. The print quality on this printer is average to above average on photos. The scan quality is grainy and streaky and not recommended for photos at ALL, and does not produce true colors of the item being scanned. Its good for documents though. The fax and fax from screen works great. The network connection is a plus if you are sharing it on a home network as I am. But I would not purchase another printer that requires that all inks be full in order to print anything. I do not recommend this printer unless you plan on always having extra ink in stock.

4Great printer for text and general useAug 25, 2010
By Tech Girl
I bought this printer to replace my 9-year old all-in-one device because I am tired or paying as much as the printer costs for a color ink cartridge. I love the fact that this printer uses separate cartridges. I already have one of these on my desk at work, and that sealed my decision to buy it for home. HP and Brother are the names to go with when printing text (which I do a lot). The text is crisp, with no detectable "fuzzies" around the characters. I chose the Brother printer because over my many years of purchasing HP printers, the software has become so bloated that I often have difficulty installing it. There is no excuse for that. The Brother software takes a little while to install (about 20 minutes on my Windows 7 machine), but it's easy to use and light on my system. The ink cartridges are very easy to get in and out. And of course, the networking feature is just icing on the cake for me. Plug it into the router, and instant access across my house.

I have two downers on this printer:
1. The paper tray is enclosed. Not only does this mean that it HAS to be removed to fill, but I can't tell how much paper remains in the tray just by looking at it. Good thing it beeps (and beeps and beeps) when it runs out of paper (or ink for that matter.
2. When the printer decides it's out of ink, it stops working - completely. All of my past HP printers would bark at me saying the ink was low or out, but would keep right on printing, so I could look at the page and decide if it was time to change the cartridge. The Brother printers disable all features (including scanning) when THE PRINTER says it's out of ink, even if a small amount remains. This means that if I don't have a cartridge on hand, the printer is a sitting duck until I do.

Overall thoughts: Excellent printer. Prints quickly, at a very high quality, and is easy to use. I don't think the photo printing is bad (good enough quality on regular paper), but I have a photo printer that I use when I want a nice photo (on photo paper), which is why my other HP printer remains.

4Does its job. Linux users: scanner isn't working as of now.Aug 08, 2010
By Jackson
The printer does what it's supposed to do. The automatic feed for the copier is a nice feature for a printer that's inexpensive. The printer itself is compatible with Linux; however, as of right now, the scanner's not making a connection with the computer. If you are a Linux user and know you're going to be using the scanner, I'd seek out a different product that's 100% guaranteed to be compatible.

4Great but .....Jul 10, 2010
By Frank Simon
I just love this printer...works great but not with the speed that I would like. Other features are just super! Perfect choice...just the speed.
