516 of these installed on our home since 2006Feb 04, 2012
By kenandshari "kenandshari"
We've used these for our DIY whole house audio system installation on 2 homes we've built. A friend who built in 2002 initially recommended these as he installed them in his home as well. Almost 10 years and he's still happy with his. We installed ours in 2006. We have whole house audio in 16 locations throughout our home and outdoor areas and have 16 of these installed. I did all of the work myself and linked them to Audio Source IC-6 ceiling speakers. We use 2 Audio Source AMP-100s and a Harmon Kardon pre-amp receiver to power the system and Phoenix Gold (just replaced one with a Pyle) 8 way speaker selectors for switching. These products are hard to beat for the money as they work well together and sound fine for areas where you just want to hear music.

A note about whole house audio: IMHO, whole house audio is one of the "coolest" bang for the buck DIY projects you can add to your home for daily enjoyment if you like music or want to keep up with the game while moving about the house doing things or entertaining. I did the entire installation during construction pulling wire before drywall was installed and installing speakers and volume controls after the painters finished. I had no real issues installing any of the equipment. I'm not a contractor, just competent with tools and meticulous with project details. Although we did our installation in our current and our previous homes during construction, I did help a neighbor install an 8 zone system in his home after the fact and that was not terribly difficult either. (Just get a wire fiche and accept that you will patch a drywall hole or two once you are done.)

OK, so back to these volume controls: The Audio Source Impedance Matching volume controls have worked fine ever since installation in 2006 and we use the system almost daily. They are a bit deep which makes them a somewhat tight fit in the wall boxes, but they fit fine. One lesson learned (if local codes allow) you can get boxes that have open backs or use a keyhole saw to cut out a portion of the back of the box to improve the fit in the wall boxes. Speaker wires attach with screws and are easy enough to connect. Just push the stripped portion of the wire into the holes and clamp it down by tightening the screws. Ours came with extra color matched screws, knobs, and wall plates to match the standard white or almond colors of the other plates in our home. The kids and their friends have not damaged any of these over the years and they wipe off easily if they get soiled by dirty hands. Once installed, they feel sturdy and the 12 positions click into place quietly enough to not be a nuisance. Overall these are great for the price. They work as advertised and are durable. If I ever undertake this project again I will continue to rely on these if they are still available.

4Solid In-Wall Volume control - multiroomsApr 08, 2012
By John Armstrong
In our last house I purchased Niles Impedance Matching Volume controls - we had 4 zones in that house. We had that system setup and in use for around 4 years when the one outside just stopped working (even though it controlled our outside zone - it was under a covered patio that was actually an extension of the roof so there was no way any rain came near the unit or the speakers mounted in the ceiling). When I replaced it, there was absolutely no evidence of water or corrisoon damage - it just stopped working.

We recently moved into a new home with 6 zones. Without hesitation, I purchased several of these units for each zone. Installation was a breeze and they all work great. I would definitely recommend this brand for any DIY looking to build a multi-room/zone audio set up.

5TOP NOTCHFeb 26, 2012

Every time I find a product that is better than a big name brand which costs over twice as much as my new find, I am very happy.
This volume control is built to last, very heavy duty. It handles variable impedance depending on your speakers and amplifier, the company includes 3 different colors of face plates, the wiring board easily removes to make wire install so much easier, the control nob is easy to turn but has very distinct detents for noting which level the volume is set at. My advice is to not use a single gang box to mount these in, the amount of wire they use in their winds is such that the size is a very tight fit, use the open frames designed with no side or back. Superior item, highly endorsed!

5Worked as expectedJan 30, 2012

Nothing special. Worked exactly as I expected. Looked good and I like the fact that it comes in three different colors

5Work Great!Dec 04, 2011

Bought 8 of these for a custom install for a client. They work great, easy to install (screw connectors pop off for wiring, then just pop them back on)
Just wire these up throughout your house with a set of speakers each, homerun everything back to your amp, set the appropriate dip switch setting (for the number of speakers in your setup) and you are good to go.
