5excellent product, but prices do fluctuate . . .Jan 27, 2010

These generic replacement ink cartridges work perfectly in my Brother MFC-490CW printer. I have ordered them several times, and have never had any problems. The MFC-490CW is a general purpose printer, and the results using these cartridges is comparable to the original Brother LC61 cartridges. Colors look decent, and ink consumption seems to be similar to the original. Being generic, there may or may not, be a brand name on the box. The generic cartridge looks slightly different from the Brother, but have no worries, they fit and are recognized by the printer's ink level monitor.

These non-OEM cartridges are packaged and sold in various quantities, so it can take a bit of research to find the best deal, for the kind of printing you do (color vs. black ink). The prices for these items fluctuate, but with shipping costs included, a unit cost in the one to two dollar range is common. That is still a fraction of the cost of the Brother LC61 cartridge. And the prices for generics at Amazon, are often better than what can be found on eBay.

Unlike Canon, Brother does not take extreme measures to try and force consumers to buy their products. These generics are inexpensive, easy to use, and produce good results. Until something better comes along, there is no reason for me to consider using anything else.

25* Service, 5* Color, Destructive BlackMay 27, 2010

I too was skeptical of this product given the incredibly low cost relative to the Brother branded ink cartridges, but went ahead based on the reviews here. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to order from this supplier again.

The color cartridges are fine, and obviously a great price. But the black cartridges I received had a different physical appearance from the Brother branded ones and the color ones received. I seemed to recall reading on another review that this might be the case (must have been for a different packaging since I don't see that comment here), so I went ahead and inserted the black cartridge. Despite the different form of cartridge, it did in fact fit into the printer. And the printer/computer recognized the cartridge, showing a full ink level.

However, a number of print jobs later, the black ink began to fade, and soon nearly disappeared altogether. I tried cleaning the print head *numerous* times to no avail. On the test print page, the black section only showed one "dot" in the matrix. Clearly there was something wrong with the cartridge. I tried one of the other cartridges but nothing improved.

So then I contacted the seller, and notified them that I seemed to have gotten the wrong black ink cartridges. I sent them pictures of both the correct (original) one and the one they sent me so they could see the physical difference. I'd post them here if I could. In what I would call excellent customer service, they seller promptly sent me replacement cartridges. Unfortunately, they were identical to the previous incorrect ones. I tried them anyway, again to no avail.

At this point I gave up on the replacements and went to Staples to purchase a Brother brand black cartridge (for ~$30!!!). Unfortunately, even after having installed the new cartridge and having run the cleaning process multiple times, the black was still not printing. :-( Seems that the replacement cartridge I purchased must have clogged the print head. I contacted Brother, who thankfully sent me a replacement (refurbished) printer, even though the warranty is supposed to be voided if you use non-Brother brand ink cartridges. They didn't ask me if I did...

I'm still using the replacement color cartridges in the new machine, and they seem fine, but I will not put the "phony" black cartridge in my machine again. Thankfully, the seller gave me a partial refund on my original purchase.

So I don't know what went wrong, but there was definitely a problem with these black cartridges. And the seller never seemed to acknowledge that they were the "wrong" ones (even though they were labeled LC61) despite my photographic documentation, other than to generically say they would "work harder to improve the quality" of their products.

So again, great responsive customer service, but a potentially disastrous product. Beware.
