I use these masks for my allergies to chemicals. They work for people with "Multiple Chemical Sensitivities". I have been using them for almost 30 years.

The product works as advertised and does block particles from the air and significantly reduces some odors, but unfortunately the item introduces its own faint but persistent odor. People with MCS beware, buy and test a single package first - you may be sensitive to the odor of this product, it certainly triggers my asthma after 1-15 minutes of use.

I have MCS and this mask has made it possible for me to hold down a job. Fortunately I work in a hospital lab where wearing a mask is okay. The activated carbon doesn't adsorb everything (not good with formaldehyde) but it helps a lot with the cleaning supplies, xylene, bleach, methanol etc. And i live in an agricultural area where there is pesticide spraying and carry the masks with me and put one on whenever I smell that stuff. It also helps some with wood smoke in the winter.

The hard part is getting used to people staring at you, but you do get used to it.

There are more attractive masks available and I've tried several and i still use the I Can Breathe when I want something a little less industrial looking. But overall this mask is the workhorse one for my daily life.

I have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) and use this mask when I go into stores and other places where I will encounter fragrances and other chemicals. I was thrilled to find a box of 20, since it is much more economical and convenient.

Ultimate for relief from smoke inhalationJan 06, 2010

I have a neighbor who installed an Outdoor Wood Boiler 150 feet from our home (currently "grandfatered" after the town decided to regulate). When the wind is from the NW, the acrid smoke, laden with fine, carcinogenic particles, envelopes our home and often finds its way inside as well. Our very lives are literally dictated by the direction of the wind. When we find it necessary to do chores or otherwise venture out on "smoke" days (~ 80% of the winter here in northern Wisconsin) we found that the 3M 8247 Particle Respirator provides the very best filtering of any of a dozen or so products we've tried. I was told that a rule of thumb is "if there is any smell ... there are particles". When using a properly fitted 3M 8247, there is no smell whatsoever. For information on OWB hazards, do a web search using "OWB Hazards" and "smoke particle hazards" as subjects.
